I don't know if any of you watched CNN last night but as I was looking to see what up-dates they had , They were talking about The GI's that had been wounded to date in Iraq and that For those who survive thier wounds when they get out of the hospital they then Get billed for all the food they ate while getting fixed up...They went on to say that this was some thing that Congress had passed in 1981 because they felt the military was double dipping if allowed to eat free while in the hospital and still recieving meal benifits in thier checks.. Okay Now here is where You All Can Jump all over my A** Because Being Ex- Military and recieving a pension from them This Kind Of thing is a bunch of Cra**...These Boys are out there fighting and dying for these fat assed Politcians
who are worried about $8.10 per day in meals while they lay in the Hospital tring to recover from wounds and or injuries recieved while fighting for us Oh ya and so those Fat Asses can keep on wasting how many Billions of dollars a day on things that matter No more than a spit to most of us...This is One of the Most outragous things I have heard yet. There is a Southern Politcian tring to get this changed (Bless Him)..I wrote my Senator today and voiced my Anger over this matter. And if I had a Congressman to write and raise he** with about it I would , But my Congressman is waiting to go to trail for Manslaughter..Which he should be sitting in Jail and waiting But hay guess thats what happens when your the friend of a president..But thats another story.. I think everyone should be up in arms about our service people getting charged for this , It is just Flat NOT right....What do you think about it.???...TinMan

I am nowhere near a military man nor wish to be...and I don't know politics worth a damn...

BUT

Those in the military, whether they are truly sent where they are sent for issues of national security and domestic freedom or not, are still the main safeguard to the aforementioned values. That being believed (by me)...FEED THE FOLKS!!!!

It would be one thing if US just didn't have the money...but the money is being spent on other stuff...always has. They are closing the VA hospital in Waco, TX and in other places. Come the hell on!!!!

My heart goes out to the soldiers and their families for answering the call...whether we at home agree with the call or not.

But Jesus F*cking Christ...bill them for their hospital food? It's not like they got drunk and fell on a rake...they were wounded in service!

And the Fat Cats worry about them double dipping?!

Sorry...as admitted, I don't have the requisite knowledge or experience to speak this forcefully on the matter...

...but that never stopped me.

Yes Hog he is the one who killed the biker. The Biker was a Business man in a small town in Min. and was on his way home on his new bike when (WILD BILL) as we in this state have called him for years was speeding down the road , they figure about 20-25 over the speed limit and then ran the stop sign and hit the bike. This man is known through out the state as one of the worst drivers on the road , he has run many people off the road and in most cases when it is reported to the police they just sweep it under the rug. I know from personal experince..This man has openly stated " if I would have to do prison time for my driving and speeding then I would slow down" this statement was made on TV by him. Now just like so many others I'm afraid he is going to walk away with a slap on the wrist. It makes me so Dang mad at the people of this state for being so gutless..This guy has been a bully most of his life and that is the way he conducts business also. I just recieved a letter from him the other day stating that he voted against a bill for Medical for Vets. because they wouldn't give what he wanted in the bill so he just voted against it. WHAT THE HELL why not take what we can get NOW and fight for more later. People who don't need some thing don't seem to care about those who do need it. Just another case of what this man is Like. (Your going to do it My way Or I'm going to take my toys home)..He is NO different than you or me he should be help accountable for his actions period , we are..As for the Meal Billing I just couldn't believe the Gross Stupidity of such at thing.. Your going to go get killed for this country but if you don't die and have to lay in the hospital for how ever long your going to pay for what food you eat while in there..How damn Outrageous is that kind of thinking. I think we should put a gun in those idiot's hand that passed that bill in 81 and make them go take the chances I think things would be alot different in a quick hurry..TinMan

Tinman... I'm sorry to hear about the Motorcyclist...
But you answered the Question to both here.. above the law.. and not voting on something because... all in one... that is how our Nation is being run not only by one Politition but they all have this sense of Security... that nothing can affect them or it doesn't directly affect them so who cares??? Including crying over not getting something added in on an Issue that would help the Vet's!!!! so then they vote the other way...

There was another Congressman/Senetor?? who was drunk Driving and left the sceen..in South Carolina?? a few years back... Killed a Biker.. I don't think he got fined much I lost track of the case, but he didn't serve much jial time before the trial I do know that...

Hey Hog,
I used to have a bumpersticker, with a 1-800 number on it, that said that very thing. It was for an organization, that would lend a hand with legal support and had a witness information hotline, so witnesses could report the accident, to both the police and the organization. It was on an old helmet I used to wear. Louisiana Motorcycle Rights Assoc. I think.

I'm confused about these "meal benefits in their checks". What exactly is this? Are people in the military given food to eat while in service or do they have to pay for it?

When a serviceman/woman is wounded are they still considered active service and paid the same amount or are they out of service and are paid a different amount?

we get paid an allowance every month for our food, which is calculated on a daily basis. The only reason for being charged for the meals in the hospital is to try to keep everything (fiscally) as balanced as possible. With me being on a ship, I get the allowance every month, and then it is deducted from my pay every month and send to my particular ship, so that they can keep their budget for feeding me. If I go back to shore duty, then I get to keep all of the money they give me, because I have to provide my own meals.

Tar is right But my Point here is that If wounded in battle There is NO way they should be charging for the Meals while that person is getting Fixed up and released to go back to what ever. We are sitting safely in our homes while these people are risking thier lives and as far as I am conserned that is worth a Lot more Than that $8 some thing a day the Goverment is charging them for thier meal because they are in a hospital where they wouldn't have been had they not been fighting for us.. They deserve alot more than that from us and if we can all contact our Fedral Reps. and Voice our Distain for this pratice then in some small way maybe we have helped those who are protecting us..Check it out it has been on the National news last week...If the Military started paying Fair price for things they buy from the civilian world instead of the inflated prices they pay we wouldn't have to play this game with our nations protectors...IMHO..As a Ex Serviceman and Father of a Current Serviceman....TinMan

Sorry if this is considered thread jacking.

I used to work for this shipping company that was a middle man between the government and the military. The company would buy items ie...hammers, grommets, seals..etc... from various places..the military would order these from the government. The government would buy from us and we would ship them. I was so disgusted to know that I was part of such a huge scam...The average hammer that you could buy at Wal-Mart for less then 20 bucks was selling anywhere from $400.00 to $600.00 a piece. We were shipping them in lots of 500 to 1000 at a time. Rubber seals they used on the ships were selling for up to $36,500 a piece. Nuts and bolts were going for an average of $5750.00 for a bag of 25. This was depending on the highest bidder(government department). So let's just say some bid a lot more because they were a little more desperate to get these items. The lady that owned this was sitting on a gold mine and was sleeping well at night. Not only was she running a lucrative business making a mint...she was also receiving grants from the government to keep her business open. So she basically had no cost...and was stuffing her pockets.

I think they should send the meal allowance to the hospital like they send it to the ship. Unless the hospital meals are less then the meal allowance.

As far as the lady Mrs. USAHog I don't blame her at all. If someone is stupid enough to offer me $400 -$600 for a $20.00 hammer you better believe I'm going to sell it to them. The people that should have problems sleeping at night are the ones buying it for that amount.

Feds Charge Wounded GIs for Hospital Food

Marine Staff Sgt. Bill Murwin suffered a partial amputation of his left foot after a grenade exploded inside his Humvee in Iraq. The feds picked up his hospital bills ... but charged him $243 for food.

"Holy smokes," he said. "I'm in the hospital, and they're going to charge me for my food?"

Only three days after he received his first bill for the meals he ate at a U.S. military hospital in Germany, he got an angry past-due notice threating to send his account to a collection agency.

"Murwin, like thousands of other military personnel hospitalized every year, is expected to reimburse the government $8.10 per day for food. That's standard procedure because of a law Congress passed in 1981. But it has angered many military families over the years," the St. Petersburg Times reported.

"When Rep. C.W. Bill Young, R-Largo, and his wife, Beverly, heard about the problem, they personally paid Murwin's tab. Then the congressman introduced a bill to change the rules."

The congressman noted that the soldiers "were sent to war by their country. Many of them will be handicapped for the rest of their lives - and we're asking them to pay $8.10 a day for their food! There's something really wrong with that."

The rationale for the rule: Most servicemen get $8.10 a day as a "basic allowance for subsistence." The government, fearing that double-dipping is going on, tries to take the allowance back from those so lucky as to be dining on hospital grub.

"If I could be king for a day, I'd stop it in a minute," said Maj. Gen. Kevin C. Kiley, who commands the Army hospitals in the eastern United States.

Injured Troops Get to Keep Meal Allowance

The Defense Department can no longer try to recoup meal allowances from sick and injured servicemen while they are receiving treatment in military hospitals.

The U.S. Senate today inserted language prohibiting the practice into the Pentagon's $87 billion request for operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Servicemen receive a daily stipend of $8.10 for food. Upon leaving a military hospital, where they received all their meals, they had been billed for the daily stipend to prevent double-dipping.

However, the nasty way that some wounded GIs were hounded for the money caused outrage in Congress.
