With a little help from the L.A. Times. I hear subscription cancellations are running in the thousands. I love a good backlash, don't you?

We in California are in the process of shooting ourselves in the foot today and while the wound won't seem to be a mortal one, there will be a resulting infection that will slowly spread and kill us ....

You see, the real backlash will come downstream when we see petitions being circulated outside local WalMart and Target stores seeking to have Arnie recalled ... then the same for the successor to Arnie, the same for the successor to the successor to Arnie and so on and so on ...

We're about to lame our governor, just as we lamed our legislators a generation ago ... no one here appears to have ever heard of James Madison and those few who have, certainly haven't absorbed much of Madison's wisdom.

Yeah ... Davis will rather deservedly be toast, and Arnie wins ... but in the process, the rest of us lose ... big-time.

can't tell if your question about Madison is a serious one or not ...

Madison was one of the Founding Fathers and was the fourth President of the US ...

His was the greatest influence on why the form of our government is NOT a true democracy, but is instead a republic form ... he argued at length with Jefferson on the subject but it was his view that prevailed ...

Society at large is simply not able to be well enough informed and educated on every issue to vote in their own best interest ... so, we elect representatives who BECOME educated and informed on our behalf and vote on the issues affecting the common good ...

Time has proven his wisdom to be valid ... but we in California have attempted to engage in citizen government ... and we're gonna sink our own ship in the process

The legislature doesn't seem to be so "lamed" that they can't vote themselves regular and substantial pay raises while layoffs in the private sector continue to snowball. They don't seem to be so lame that they can't entertain the idea of an SUV tax while they ride around in their Navigators with their taxpayer-financed $500-a-month car allowance. They don't seem to be so lame that they guarantee themselves generous retirement packages while the rest of us watch our stocks, options, and savings dwindle.

Yep indeedy, the intellectual elite are doing a great job running the state and the country. I don't see any reason at all why we shouldn't limit the right to vote to those very same folks.

Steve, great post. We have nuetered the legislature with Propositions and we will now nueter the Governor with a Recall. We think we have seen do nothing governments up till now, wait until we see the result of this. There will be no hard decisions ever made by the Governor (any governor Repub or Demo)because someone will fund a recall. I can't stand Davis but I voted no (and I voted for Uberoth even though he dropped out - could not vote for any of the top three as I feel any of them will be really bad for the State). Have at it guys.

"We have staked the whole future of American civilization, not upon the power of government, far from it. We have staked the future of all our political institutions upon the capacity of mankind for self-government, upon the capacity of each and all of us to govern ourselves, to control ourselves, to sustain ourselves according to the Ten Commandments."

- James Madison

While recall after recall could and very well may happen.I just don't see it,mainly because you just won't see the support to recall Arnold or whoever wins this election that there is to recall Davis.I know way too many democrats that signed the petitions to recall Davis and these same people are also voting for Arnold.
I personally voted for it, just to send these bastids in Sacto a message that they could all be next, well that and just to shake things up a bit...LOL

BTW my Dem freinds that are voting Davis out and Arnold in are doing it for the very same reasons.I'll also say that if thats what the Democratic party wants to do(mutiple recalls),BRING IT ON!

Most political opinions on the misc. board are strictly along party lines. Not many independent thinkers here. Oh well. If Bush had won the popular vote but Algore the electoral, I suppose the Republicans would have been talking about doing away with the electoral college.

I thank God we live in a republic and not a democracy. There is too much room for mob rule already.

If Californians want to change their laws when Democrats get negatively impacted by them, crank out another initiative.

I think Arnie is going to be good for California. No matter how good he is, though, the only Dem who will root for him is Maria. Too bad that's the way things are, huh.
