I recently went on a trip to Watsonville for a 5 day horse show (my daughter was a participant). We camped out at the fairgrounds with about 100 other RV's. I fired up (more than) a few cigars while there. Except for the occasional cigarette smoker, I was the only one around enjoying a cigar. (A few people looked at my cigar with distaste...too bad for them) I looked, I kept my nose tuned in. You know how it is when you stumble across another brother of the leaf, strike up a conversation and maybe share some of your favorites. Man I couldn't find one at all.

It wasn't just there. I've noticed a downward trend in cigar smoking population everywhere. I have been to a number of events and places (including golf courses) and haven't seen much in the way of cigar smokers.

I went to the horse race track and only saw a few old guys smoking their Garcia Y Vega's, but this year they banned smoking in the stands. (I thought the race track was the last bastion of the community herf). Just a coupe years ago, I would frequently see people lighting up a cigar here and there.

Maybe people are starting to bow to the pressure of others who hassle cigar smokers ("Gawd that stinks! Are you going to light THAT here? Cough cough cough!" etc.) Maybe the social stigma of smoking is starting to catch on? Maybe the price is too much for these in our curerent economy?

I don't know. Has anyone else seen a similar trend? Any thoughts?

Good thing though, in a couple weeks they will be having a martini and cigar tasting event downtown (Fresno). I'm sure I'll stumble across a few there.

Not seeing that out here(St Louis MO area). I visit with several cigar smokers at my kid's baseball and soccer games we trade off and enjoy the banter.

Last tournament I fished at Truman Lake there were numerous cigar smokers including the emcee(a local newscaster), the person weighing the fish and the guide that spoke prior to the take off.

Of course I do get the 'look' from the non-smokers. We respect their choice and smoke a distance from them.

When I moved back to Cleveland in '97, the first thing I noticed was the number of smokers of all types.
Apparently, in the Washinton DC area, only certain types of smoking are permitted in very select locations. If you smoked, you spent more time outside and less time working, and your insurance premium went up, costing your employer more money. Healthy living was really big down there.
Here it seems, everyone smokes, drinks, and eats. Restaurants have small non-smoking areas, and people regularly disregard no smoking rules and areas.
