A similar thing happened to an impoverished semi-literate elderly black woman here in the Bay Area not long ago ... it was heart warming to see the number of both individuals and corporations who sprang to her defense, turned the situation around and are now helping to fix her place up for her ...

Something isn't right with this story. The begining of the article says the old woman had no idea the County was trying to collect until somone called Monday night. Yet later in the article is says she tried to make payment and they wouldn't let her because it wasn't in a money order or certified check form.

Did she think that they just wiped her slate clean? Why wouldn't they be trying to collect? 12 notices and she didn't know they were trying to collect?

I have to go with the County on this one.

If it is so measly why didn't she pay it?

I work for a County Governement. I know we don't just take someones land and sell it. There is a long process that needs to be done before land is actually taken and sold. It sounds like that is the case here as well. Why didn't she pay the amount.

Let me ask you this. If it was a 40 year old multimillionaire and the circumstances were the same would you feel the same way for him? I doubt it.

I just don't buy that this woman didn't know they were going to sell her property if she didn't pay her bill.

PS sketcha I can do without the name calling thank you.

Sorry plabonte. I really thought you were kidding so that name call was meant in jest.

You're right. I would feel differently if it were a millionaire. I'm far from a socialist, but sometimes you have to make exceptions. Maybe you're right. Maybe there is more to the story. I'm just going on what I read. It is possible, however that an 89 year old woman could "forget" about a tax bill. Even without ahlzheimer's, rarely does someone that old have a steel trap memory.

Again, I apologize for the name calling.

Oh sorry, I didn't take it as a jest. But since that is what it was then no offense taken. (I need to get some thicker skin me thinks).

I could've been more clear. That's what little sideways smiley faces are for.

Hey! We solved a minor dispute without getting Trish involved, you know, kinda' like adults. Wonders never cease. = )

Take it easy, p
