An Essay by President George W. Bush

Over the course of my life, I have often benefitted from the friendship of others (see "On Friendship"). It is through my friends and the friends of my father that I came to acquire the Texas Rangers, it is through my friends and the friends of my father that I was able to acquire my first oil company, it is through my friends and the friends of my father that I was able to run for Congress, and it is through my friends and the friends of my father that I became Governor of Texas.

Finally, it is through my brother, my friends and the friends of my father that I became President of the United States.

But besides high-profile friendship, my career has been marked by another, less cheerful pattern: a lack of second chances.

When my oil company couldn't find any oil in Texas, through no fault of my own, it went bankrupt just after I sold all my stock. I was never given another chance to own an oil company.

When I lost my race for Congress, I was never offered another chance to run such a race--even though I had lost through no fault of my own, elections being so often the "wild cards" of our politics.

When I went AWOL from the Texas National Guard, no one ever offered me another chance to earn an honorable discharge.

When, as Governor of Texas, I was asked to change pollution laws for power and oil companies and did just that, I accidentally made Texas the most polluted state in the Union, and Houston the most polluted city in America. Yet no one ever offered me a second chance to achieve an honorable record in Texas.

When, as Governor of Texas, I was asked to cut taxes too much and did so, I accidentally bankrupted the Texas government. Yet no one ever offered me a second chance to achieve an honorable record in Texas.

Today, as President of the United States, I of course have done some marvelous things. I have already set the all-time record for most campaign fund-raising trips of any President in US history. I kept the US out of the international spotlight by withdrawing from the World Court. I avoided media insanity quite well, with fewer televised press conferences than any other President since the advent of television.

But I know, too, that my record hasn't been perfect. Leaving aside my accomplishments for the moment, I'd like to eat some humble pie:

Three million of you have lost your jobs over the past three years. That is bad – worse than at any other time since the Great Depression, when Herbert Hoover was President. I know this.
1.7 million of you dropped below the poverty line this past year. That is bad, because 1.7 million is the population of Philadelphia, the "city of brotherly love." Imagine all of Philadelphia falling off the shelf of prosperity, all at once. Believe me, I know.
For those of you in the middle classes, incomes have gone down, after rising throughout the 1990s. I know.
My tax cuts have turned your budget surplus into a $480 billion deficit. I know there are many things you could have used the surplus for, and I know it will cause your children some stress later on. I know this.
It was during my tenure that more private bankruptcies were filed in twelve months than ever before. I know.
It was during my tenure that the stock market dropped more than ever before in history. I know.
I accidentally appointed more convicted criminals to administration positions than any other President in US history. I'm living with that legacy, like all of us are.
I also accidentally appointed more multi-millionaires to my cabinet than any other President in US history. My cabinet is by far the richest of any in US history. This was a tactless move, I know – I know.
Your country's security is a mess. Even my generals in the field, even my Homeland Security apparatus, even Rumsfeld is telling me that now, the American people face a great deal more of a threat than before my War on Terror began. I know that too.
After taking the entire month of August off for vacation, I presided over the worst security failure in US history. I remember that well, even today.
Your country's diplomacy is in tatters. After September 11, we received an outpouring of heartfelt sympathy from our allies and enemies alike. We had an opportunity to build on that sympathy. Today, none of our allies trusts us one bit, and not only because we found no weapons of mass destruction. I know how this hurts some of you. Believe me, I know.
I dissolved more international treaties than any other President in US history. I know that this hasn't helped our diplomacy either.
More people have taken to the streets to protest me and my actions (around 15 million worldwide on February 15 alone) than ever before in the history of humanity. I know these figures quite well.
Because of my actions, the United Nations removed the US from its human rights commission and its elections monitoring board. I know that!
Now all this is not good, I know. But I'm asking you for a second chance. If you grant it to me, it will be a first for my lifetime, and I will forever be grateful.
As an American, I think you can understand the importance of second chances. If you've lost your job during my tenure, surely you'll want some corporation, somewhere on earth, to give you another job someday, and not say "Oh, no, you messed up for good. You can't ever work again."

Since there's a good chance you can relate to this scenario, I feel I can ask you, as a friend: please, give me a second four-year term. Give me that second chance--for once in my life.

Thank you.

- George W. Bush

Sarcasm has long been called the devil's tool, and seems to be the favorite literary device of the liberal mind. Can this be a coincidence?

And, oh yes, one more thing, regarding those disgusting tax breaks for the rich:

NEW YORK Dec 2, 2003 — Stocks rose Monday, with the Standard & Poor's 500 index hitting a 22-month closing high, as investors welcomed a report showing U.S. factories steaming ahead in November at their quickest pace since 1983.

I'm new to CigarBid but have recognized that this forum is populated by a significant number of those on the "right". Nice to see a clear and concise (unbiased)rehash GWB's failed presidency. By the way, my familys been Democrats since before the Civil War and would vote for an old yellow dog before we'd vote for a Republican. Note: That old yellow dog is looking pretty good when compared to what we Democrats have running this election.

Unbiased? Blaming President Bush for the initial economic recession is like blaming JFK for being shot.

Presidents always get more credit/blame than they deserve for the economy. Therefore, if bad things happen on his watch, Bush takes the hit. I moved all of my equities into government bonds the day after Bush was elected. My formula is simple. If a Republican is elected get out of the stock market and into something safe. Wait for the turbulance to settle (a Democratic President) and move back in.

Lastly, bias is in the eye of the beholder. I got more than one chuckle during the ninties when the "right" blamed the Clintons for everything from murder to mayhem. Your view of "liberal bias" is my view of a well reasoned, well thought out analysis.

That's all well and fine, but it's still not "unbiased".
The original post was clever. It was humorous.
But it was also biased, and I don't think it was intended to be anything but.
A tongue in cheek approach, which highlights half-truths and misleading data, is meant to be funny.

To read it as "unbiased" would be akin to having my Senior Senator Kennedy as the designated driver.

Actually tailgater, my tongue was firmly planted in my right(oops)left cheek when I typed that "unbaised" comment.

"If a Republican is elected get out of the stock market and into something safe. Wait for the turbulance to settle (a Democratic President) and move back in."

Then you're a fool with words and with your money! Following your advice would cost someone a pretty penny. Both of the recoveries have happened under Republicans with the market down in the dumps. You missed out on the biggest profit margins.

Vote for the dog, yeah that's a way better alternative to the 9 Mondales!

Regardless of party, anyone who votes a straight ticket for any reason must not be able to think.

I will never understand how anyone could do this. You vote for the best candidate period.

Most of the folks I know who do this are menial laborers who have no thought process.

I always vote Democrat cause Granpappy said so. Ya know what Grandpappy is dead think for yourself.

Saying I would vote for a dog before a Republican is a shame. You do not even deserve this right.

Remind me again which two recoveries happened under Republicans.

tonester666

Man, chill out. People who vote for the best candidate regardless of party are called Independents (also known as "swing voters". People who vote with the party are called partisans. Think LBJ ever voted for a Republican. Think Tom DeLay ever voted for a Democrat. Not likely.

Texas Democrats take great pride in voting for the yellow dog. (That's a joke for you more judgmental readers)

Granpappy might be dead, but if I voted for a Republican, he'd rise up and haunt me forever.

Lastly, we are fortunate in this country that you don't get to decide who has the right to vote and who doesn't. Those poor menial laborers who have no thought process would be s.o.l. You sure you're not a Democrat. That sounded kinda "elitist"

OK, I chilled. I claim no party. Our forefathers never meant for us to have a party system. It just always aggravated the crap out of me to hear the inlaws say the union says vote straight Democrat so if you live in my house...

I am glad to say that my wife did not follow that rule.

My Dad also a union man rarely votes Democrat.

Texas huh, I thought all you cowboys were good publicans.

MDavis, I am curious as to what would make a person vote for a lousy candidate just because they are of the same party. Can you help me out with that?

Back where I belong trades/cigars and related. Those boards were slow so I slummed for a bit.

Think I'll smoke a Texas Star tonight.

Reagan - http://www.ncpa.org/pd/economy/ecoa4d.html

Bush - http://www.cbn.com/CBNNews/News/031107e.asp

You missed the train both times! You should've let the dog do your investing. He couldn't do any worse than you, and you could always blame him instead of the sitting Presidents!

Man, LBJ is doing 360s in his grave. 'Publicans are a fairly new species in Texas. This state was very Democratic until the last several years. What you have to understand is a lot of southern Democrats were pretty conservative. When the Democratic Party started moving to the left, the south started going 'publican. Damn traitors!

Your question about voting for a party candidate regardless of talent will take way to much time and energy to explain my views. While I appreciate your interest in trying to understand the "dark side", it may be a discussion for a later date. Suffice it to say both Republicans and Democratics partake of the evil fruit.

Enjoy your smoke tonight. I have an Indian Tabac lined up for this evening.

Tongue planted firmly in cheek:
_____________________________________________________________________________

An Essay By Former President William J. Clinton

Damn I’m freakin horny. I wish people would stop bothering me about foreign affairs; I don’t have time for that petty stuff. We just got this new intern and she’s making it difficult for me to concentrate. The other day her and I were… actually… I forgot what we where doing. In any case, her and I were doing something together and we got interrupted by one of my annoying aides. He tells me some of our military died in Somalia. As soon as I find out where this “Somalia” is, I’m going to pull those guys home… it doesn’t matter why they were there. Well, I’ll do that after I finish up with my new intern.

Someone tells me we had a Special Forces agent in Iraq putting together a resistance force against Saddam Hussein. They tell me he was just about to “pull the trigger” and have the resistance assassinate Saddam Hussein. He was just calling in for the final go ahead. I don’t know who this Saddam Hussein is, but as soon as I find out what “Special Forces” are, I’m going to court martial that guy. I just have to make sure that “Special” doesn’t mean he’s mentally retarded… can’t have that type of publicity.

That new intern is driving me crazy. She smiled at me today and all I could think about is what better things she could do with those lips. That’s probably why I lost some card with our new clearer launch codes on them. Everyone was panicking and running around looking for them. I don’t know what the big deal is, so they have some code that is new and clearer. Don’t we have copies of these things? Anyway, while that was going on, I got a new personal record golf score.

Hillary just got done yelling at me about some publicity stuff. She’s telling me to “take care” of some guys that “know” something or is investigating us. I’m getting tired to doing these things. Besides, I’m finding it hard to find new bodyguards.

I'm not an expert, but I was always told that typing in caps was akin to shouting. Since you appeared to be shouting at me, I guess I thought you were getting emotional. My mistake.
