Protecting pool table from cigar smoke?

We just got a new regulation size slate pool table.
My wife is concerned that since I like to smoke cigars while playing pool, that the smoke may harm the pool table? I am assuming that she is worried about the felt. So, is it anything to worry about or will normal cleaning be fine? This thing weighs a ton and where they set it when they deliver it will be where it stays. LOL!

Yo Opatience: Normal cleaning should do. I would worry more about chaulk stains or non pool shooters and their trying to put back spin on the Q-ball, that is if your the worrying type. Good Luck with your new Pool Table. Jon ( Minnesota ) R. LOL

I am an expert on pool table felt.

If you insist on smoking cigars in the presense of your felt, you should take preventitive measures to keep the felt from acquiesing to the cigar residuals.

My studies show that the presence of human hormones, introduced via normal air circulation, greatly increase the life of felt. This can be achieved simply by normal sexual relations on the surface of your pool table on a semi-regular basis.

Good Luck - I hope this works.

Ha ha, I'll just have to try that.
Although, I would think that it would be a little rough on the body. LOL!

Should be fun though. Playing pool that is. But the other sounds fun too. Hmmmmmmm.

I wouldn't sweat the cigar smoke myself,if your going to be playing quite often you will probably be re-felting the table every 2-3 yrs anyway(you can do it yourself if your handy).Just remember to install a couple/few bar heigth shelfs or whatever on the walls to acomodate some ashtrays and the adult beverages.Beverage on rail = BAD! LOL

Enjoy,JJ

I agree, drinks/cigars on rail=bad. I have a regulation size brunswick, and it scares the crap out of me when one of my friends wants to jump the cue ball, or pretend they can draw the ball the length of the table. Congrats on the new table!

I did my doctorate in feltistry, and cigar smoke is the worst thing you can do to your pool table. I seriously recommend whichever cigar you're tempted to smoke when playing pool be sent to me.

My grandfather (rest his soul) taught us to shoot pool before we could see over the table (I used to drag a stool around the table to stand on and shoot) The rule was and still is (table now at my dad's house, I can't play as well anymore)

NO DRINKS NEAR THE TABLE. As far as cigars go, don't drop the ash on the table.

The sex thing...we just rolled under the table.

gorob, That story sounds a lot like mine. My grandfather taught me to play. I use to shoot with the stick on my shoulder. It is one of my best childhood memories. I still have the table too.

It was wonderful. Papa (my grandfather) I remember would always get after us "wash those hands before You play pool and No riding the cue like a horsey" lmao he was great. We still have the origianl cover he used. Leather on the up side and felt underneath. My mom changed the felt from green to red when it needed to be changed, I about died, but it was her dad so not much I could say huh? The table must be about 50-70 years old I guess. I imagine it will be in the family a long long time..just wish I was semi good at it :)

I can do a little research on the table if you are interested. Just email some pictures to me. I research my table and learned a lot about it. We also thought it was 50 years old, we thought wrong. It was built in the late 1800's.
LMAO, We never rode the cues likes horses, but we did use them as swords.

i've never been near a pool table that didn't have the fragrance of good cigars, and burn marks where the cigars were laid to rest furing a 3 or 4 ball run.

if you are that concerned, give up cigars, don't invite anyone to play and/or keep the table covered with sheets, covered with plastic, covered with a quilt.

I learned too as a youngster by way of my grandfather. Have owned a couple of tables myself. One of my friends owns a sports related store and for years pool halls and bars. Never have I been in a place near that does not have smoke. The cleaning of felt is necessary to keep any table maintained, but I have not ever noticed any adverse affects of tobacco ruining your game. My advice, don't get smoke in your eyes and don't lay your cigar on the table.

For what it's worth, pool table felt is pretty easy to replace anyway. And if you did so, you could do some cool color (if it's not already) like grey or red. It's not hard, so enjoy your cigars (or as per mrtelcom's suggestion, some "human hormones").

Go for the gusto! Play pool, enjoy drinks, smoke lots of cigars and replace the felt when it starts to show wear or discoloration beyond your tolorance level. Take good care of the wood though. That's what my brother has done.

No drinks EVER on the table! JMHO...

SMADDOX I know he got it from my grandmother but since my mom died I don't know how to tell excatly what year. It is a 3 slater (I watched the guy put it together when it was moved to my folks house) about an inch if I remember right. And as far as I am concerned green is the only way to go.
ok we all agree with the no drinks on the table now about the sex deal .......

I used to think green was the only color, but a local hall that I used to shoot at in Rochester MI had nothing but mustard yellow felt. Sounds nasty, but to see 18 7' tables lit up...awesome. Once they changed their cigar policy I bolted and never went back. Rochester Mills Brewery installed some tables and VIOLA...they even served cold beer!
