Living in San Diego, there are a lot of Spanish names. This looks to me like it would be pronounced "Par tag' as", but a young clerk at the smoke shop pronounced it "Par' ta gas". Which is right?

I have never heard the Cigar referred to anything other than PAR * TUH * GUS

It is Par ta Gas

Par TUH GUS would be the wheto (caucasion) pronounciation.

Here is a link to a page with correct pronounciations of many brands.

http://www.cigargroup.com/pronoun/

Although it is a cigar website. They do not sell cigars. But the do have listings of retailers. CI is one of them so I hope this is ok.

FYI: For those interested, Rafael Bernardo, the fellow you hear, if you listen to the pronunciation guide, has a wonderfully informative site at http://www.mycigarsite.com/subopciones/index/indexeng.html

Rafael lives in Madrid and is an avid cigar hobbyist. His accent is distinctly Castillian Spanish and varies significantly from the Spanish spoken in Mexico and much of Latin America. There are, however, great similarities in the Spanish spoken in Madrid and in some parts of Havana. If you listen to the "alternate" Partagus pronunciation, the final "s" is sounded as "th" which is distinctly a Castillian accent.

Say Par ta gaz and then add Black Label to the sentence and you got one hell of a cigar in any language!
