in spite of opposition from conservative groups wanting to maintain the status quo for fear of the uncertainty of what changes they might have to a accept and deal with, freethinkers move ahead and benifit all mankind. Galileo, studied the stars & planets, and their movements in the heavens; thereby producing evidence that what Capernicus had said, was in fact, true. As a result of this he was forced (under threats of torture and/or execution), to publically confess and rescind the Copernican theory that the sun, and not the earth, was the center of the solar system. he spent the last eight years of his life under house arrest because of what his peers thought people might think of his findings.
Louis Pasteur discoveres a process for purifying milk Jonas E. Salk, developes the first safe and effective polio treatment. In 1846 Thomas Morton, the man who conquered pain, demonstrated the use of ether anesthesia during an operation at Massachusetts General
Hospital. Philipp Semmelweis, 1818–65, Hungarian physician, while on the staff of the general hospital in Vienna, recognized the infectious nature of puerperal fever and insisted that attendants in obstetrical cases thoroughly cleanse their hands; he thus greatly reduced the mortality rate from infection in childbirth. Ridicule of his belief ultimately drove him to insanity and suicide. The value of his work was fully recognized until 1890. 2001, stemcell research, fought by religious groups and various right to life groups, heavely in favor of the barbaric death penalty, once again, tried to prevent the advancement of science.

Most people aren't against "adult" stem cell reasearch or even embilical cord reasearch Rick. What I'm against is the wholesale manufacture of human life to be sold for parts. You people that believe it's no problem at all to kill innocent lives because of the inconvience or for profit and in the name of science scare the hell out of me.Hitler and the Nazi's would be proud of all you free thinkers today...

jjohnson28: i am not a member of a group called "you people". are you suggesting that taking an egg and fertilizing it, makes it human life? there is a
sci-fi book called, i believe, "part's". the story is about a group of people, locked in a storage facility, each of whom was cloned, and is owned by someone and are used as spare parts in case the "owner" needs a new cornea, or a liver, etc. sort of like what is happining in india and other countries where people are selling one of their kidneys. that is abhorrent. are we getting a little closer to the sme page?

"are you suggesting that taking an egg and fertilizing it, makes it human life". If by this statement you are refering to a Human egg,yes I do and it is wrong to attempt to use them for anything other than bringing them full term to birth. If they are not totally innocent humans what are they?If you want to use aborted fetus/feti (sp) I would have nary a problem with this(even though I am against abortions as a form of birth control). That being said to manufacture "human" embryos for the purpose of stem cell research is wrong IMO.Are we closer to being on the same page?Rick it's kind of hard to answer that, seeing as how you have stated many times over that sometimes you only comment in order to stir things up...Where exactly do you stand on this issue??? Jim, sounds a lot like Rick is wafting from one side to the other, sort of a down the middle split! Sounds a lot like his nemisis-GWB! This was the most difficult decision he will have to make, and he did about the only thing feasable, and still is catching hell from both sides! Rick, quit hyperventilating, I was only kidding! Sometimes, oftentimes...hell, MOST of the time you just don't get it Rick. Was stem cell research invented in 2001? What did the previous administration do for it? This is NOT about the US Government being "for" or "against" medical advancement. It's about utilizing PUBLIC tax dollars for controversial research. Research which furthermore has shown promise with non-fetal cells (embilical and adult). Bush did not do what the Clinton adminstration did: Delay a Decision. He instead tackled this issue head on. He is putting mucho pesos into research, which should show whether this is truly feasible. Once that research shows a positive or negative result, private industry can and should take over. Remember, if research funding is predicated on achieving Positive results, what do honestly think these scientists will "prove" if the government perpetually funds it? Let me state that again: If it takes "positive" results to keep the research funding alive, then "positive" results will ALWAYS be achieved. Get it?

Rick likes to either look the other way or critize GWB rather than say, "oh, he tackled something that was too damn controversial for Hillary and Bill for the last eight years!" Face it guys GWB, and his administration, will face the problems head on and not shove them aside. Too bad the liberal left like to ignore the positive achievements of the President and focus on vacation time and the fact that he isn't the greatest speaker we have ever had in Whitehouse. Charlie
