Bush Plans Major Space Announcement

By Steve Holland and Adam Entous

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Buoyed by a successful landing on Mars by a robot explorer, President Bush (news - web sites) plans a major announcement on space policy next week that may lead to sending Americans back to the moon, congressional aides said on Thursday.

Nearly a year after the shuttle Colombia exploded on reentering the atmosphere, sending NASA (news - web sites) into a deep spell of melancholy, Bush is expected to outline a sweeping vision of U.S. space leadership.

He is expected to propose a new lunar initiative that could lead to a mission to Mars in the long term, said the sources, who asked to remain unidentified.

Yo Robby: If we never went the first time does that mean were not going there again and does that mean it will be easier to flag down a cab ? JonR

Maybe Bush can lead the way on a one way ticket.

(oh you republicans... just a joke)

Actually this excites me wery much. Of course words and promises are cheap. Let's see how much funding is set aside to go forward with this effort and then I'll feel better.

Hola Telcom, hows things going.. Hope your holidays were great..

I think it is awesome that there is finally some passion about the space program. We get so much from it.. Yet for years it has been under funded, and management is a complete basket case.. ( At least at JSC )

This is an interesting topic.. Should the US fund one of the largest Research and Development projects in the world? So many things that we use today were developed from the Apollo project.. lcd's, thin metal coatings (that stuff on the inside of your potato chip bags), robotics, satellites, etc, etc.... What do you think?

I'm all for it. Every thing we have is directly due to science.

You know, I'd love to send a manned ship to Mars and have a permanent station on the moon. I think we should have had a moon station a long time ago. However, I think this is an "I'll believe it when I see it." With the way our countries debt is going out of proportion I don't see how we're going to be able to pay for it. I think this is a red herring being used for political gain.

I am writing a letter to NASA to make them aware of the unique qualifications of my mother in law for inter-planetary exploration.

Rick,

Don't worry about New York....Senator Clinton has found some Indian immigrants at a gas station and she'll take care of it.
