Ok I know this is subject is a dead horse but hear me out, I was talking to my father who has been a plumber for more years than I can remember, I was explaning why we use distilled water in the humidors instead of tap. He agread with me that it has less impurities than tap but he also said that not all impurities are removed by the evaporation process. He said that reverse osmosis systems can make water so pure because of the extremely fine membrane they use to remove everthing from the water. Some of the best set ups can make the water so pure that it would not even conduct electricity. Now don't start yellin at me just putting something up for discusion that I thought was an interesting point from a different prospective. If anyone has tried this I would like to know. I will be getting a small system probably early next year and will try it on my own humidors.

I am not really sure about what you are talking about with the wasted water part but I will only use the water from the system for my humidors. I have a filter system now, but that is for my drinking water. Also not to worried about the cost, more in the fact that I have lots of expensive cigars that are in long term storage and using the cleanest water possible for keeping them as fresh as I can.

its been awhile since i was trained on them but i believe it was for every gallon of filtered water you use 6 or 7 gallons of water , the rest is wasted down the drain

RO systems do remove more impurities than any other filtration systems available today. But they are a slower process and much more expensive. For use in humidors is a waste of time. For expensive fish aquariums, not a waste of time.

If I'm not mistaken, isn't distilled water 'steam' that has been condensed? I don't know how many impurities can 'go up in steam', besides the volatile ones, but then, aren't they 'distilled' off? I have a whole house water purification system that uses the different layers of beads (had this for 15 years) that also has a membrane RO system at the kitchen sink (same one used in hospitals for intraveneous solutions), that also is connected to my ice maker. It goes down to 1/10,000 of a micron, and the water is so pure, the ice is totally clear, none of that foggy white ice. I have used nothing but this water in all 8 of my humidors, with no problems ...

It doesn't matter which water is more pure. The distilled water for humidors is intended to prevent mold and other growth as well as flavor. Distilled water works. RO should work fine, but it's overkill. If ya got it, use it. As my friend used to say: "same differnce..."

One other thing: I don't think it is the minerals in the water that create the path for the flow of electrons. In other words, you shouldn't put out an electrical fire with a bucket of RO water.

Actually it is the minerals and other impurities in water that conduct electricity. 100% pure water can actually be used as an insulator. But since 100% pure is near impossible I still wouldn't throw water on electricity.

It took me a while to figure out why I was laughing when reading this thread. I slowly realized that it was not the shear ridiculous nature of the topic nor that so many of you felt it was necessary to respond to such that brought on such tittering. It became clear that this is the same group that has so passionately debated subjects such as overbidding, cooler-dors and whether or not Lone Wolf is a credible cigar. Do you see the irony? Why would this group debate the physics of H2O; distilled vs. reverse osmosis when our ultimate intention is to keep a few $3 smokes from drying out in an igloo cooler? We spend hours crucifying those who spend a few more dollars then they should on a box of cigars yet find no quirk in the concept of investing $ in a reverse osmosis filter contraption that does who knows what for cigars. Sounds funny doesn’t it?
