It seems a bill might be passed that would ban all shipping of tobacco products... including cigars. This is just another example of the government crack down on tobacco. I thought this was a free country…

Anyway, here’s the link and hopefully we’ll make some noise over this.

Agree with you Sylance. The final version with the additional wording of "cigars" and "all tobacco products" is in H.R.284. The House Judiciary Committee will consider the bill tomorrow (01/21/2004), or on 01/28/2004. A little additional information for any of you who may want to express your views:

The Honorable _________________
United States House of Representatives
Washington, D.C. 20515

Dear Congressman:

On December 9, 2003, the U.S. Senate cut a last minute deal to ban all sales of cigars through the U.S. mail. This provision was quietly slipped into the cigarette anti-counterfeiting bill (S.1177), even though the rest of the bill had nothing to do with cigars. The House Judiciary Committee will soon consider its version (H.R.2824) of the same bill.

I need you to keep cigars out of this bill! There is not a counterfeit cigar problem in this country. There is not a youth cigar-smoking problem in this country. This is another example of a big government solution in search of a problem that does not exist. Please do the right thing and don't let the federal government tamper with my right to receive legal cigars through the mail.

Sincerely,

While I am certainly not an activist, OUR right to smoke has been curtailed again and again. Just my thoughts............

Seems strange that this topic isn't driving comments. If the bill passes, this very site will cease to exist.

Comments???

a ban on shipping via US Mail is not the end of the world ... there's still other methods of shipping available ...

I believe this is a ban on all shipping - US Mail, UPS, FedEx, etc...

So yes this is a big deal.

As I posted on cigars and related, while H.R.2824 does not contain the terms "cigars" and "all tobacco products" it's sister bill (S.1177), which has ALREADY passed the Senate, does. To me it is a nervous proposition to "assume" that the House would not simply incorporate the language in both versions, which are very similar in nature (other than the exceptions noted above), without at least hearing from some voices of dissent. Just my thoughts........

"what ya in fer "? your cell-mate asks.

"shipping cigar's through the mail system" is your reply.... " i was trying to ship a box when they caught me ! i would have made it too if it hadn't been for the tabbaco sniffing dog catching a wiff !"

scary thought ! :>(

I have just done my Part.
I just got off the phone, with my representatives staffer in Washington. I explained my problem with the bill, and explained that I would be watching the voting record on this bill. I also explained that I volunteered 35 hours a week during his last election, manning phones, and putting up yard signs to help him get elected. And If he votes to pass bill HR2824, that those hours would be donated to whomever runs against him, in his next election. I have also emailed everyone on the judicial committee, telling them to oppose this bill. I know the states need the tax dollars, but there must be another way to collect them.
Later
Dave (A.K.A. Homebrew)
P.S. I don't think that Congress, or the WhiteHouse realize how many people the will put out of buisness, and unemploy.

I too, have called my represenative and senator's office, as well as sent e-mails to each of them, explaining why I think that they should defeat this.
I tried.

Just another thought.
Maybe we should ask these congressmen, senators and representatives how they think our troops got the cigars they were able to light up in victory.

Do they wish to deprive our troops of such a simple pleasure?

Come on guys, this is something that affects us all. Let get some support and rally around this cause. I have seen some pretty heated political debate on these boards in the past but something that we can all come together on arises and everyone sits on their ass and pays no attention…..

What’s the deal? 14 responses to a post of this magnitude is pathetic!! Maybe some of you have contacted your congressmen and not posted here but I really feel that there are a majority out there that have not done anything.

This is the time to stand up for your rights. Not by posting on some anonymous forum, but by taking a stand with your local congressman via phone, fax, or email. Lets go people!!!!!!!!!!!
