So there's a sign on the wall of our local California DMV:

"It is unlawful to bribe or threaten State employees."

Really? Hmm. I thought it was unlawful to threaten anybody. Why would State employees require a special law just for them? Could it be because they're threatened at a higher rate than normal people because they're rude, lazy, arrogant, smug, incompetent morons, and people frequently get frustrated by their buffoonery?

Nah, couldn't be!

Case in point: My wife suffered a series of seizures one afternoon about eight months ago. A parade of EKG's, EEG's, MRI's and blood tests revealed absolutely nothing. Getting her neurologist's office staff to perform any such complex tasks as making an appointment or sending out forms in a timely manner proved to be impossible, but that's another story.

After fiddling with her medication dosage a bit, he finally released her to drive, and we've been waiting nearly THREE FRIGGIN’ MONTHS for her forms to move from one desk at the DMV to another, I kid you not. Finally some clown calls her for a reinstatement hearing, which took place last Wednesday before the New Year holiday. He said, "I'll make a note on your paperwork to call you--probably on Monday, but I promise no later than Tuesday."

Trust me, we were ready to celebrate right then. If you've never lost your driving privilege, it sucks moose. I don't know how she's dealt with it all this time. A few highlights:

1. She can only work part time right now, because what used to be a 10 minute commute now takes 90 minutes (or longer) on the bus. One way.

2. The bus doesn't go everywhere, so that limits the number of jobs you can even apply for.

3. As soon as prospective employers find out you're taking the bus, they suddenly "have a bunch more applications to consider. We'll be making a decision some time next week."

4. Christmas sucks when you're broke.

5. Speaking of the bus, do you know who rides the bus? Homeless schizophrenic drunks who haven't bathed in months, for one. Not to mention standing alone at bus stops at night, in the cold/wind/rain because the city doesn't bother to cover all of them.

So last Monday, no call. She calls and leaves a voicemail Monday afternoon (after being told by another employee that he was definitely in the office). No response. Today she leaves two messages. Guess what? No response.

She can't get this moron to do her a simple courtesy, let alone do his friggin' job right. I hope Arnold's budget cuts are deep and wide. I hope this idiot gets laid off first. Then I hope we see him out in public somewhere.

When he's not a State employee anymore.

Sorry to hear of your wife's circumstances ... but to tell you the truth, there's no surprises for me in your story ... Arnold has his hands more than full if he is to REALLY change the way CA's government does business ...

HEY!! ... what if THAT's your answer?? ... send Arnold a letter ... I kid you not ... seriously, send one ... what can it hurt? ... and maybe, just MAYBE, it could make a big-time difference for you ...

what SteveS has said Rick... it works.. I know first hand and am feeling the difference more and more...

oh and one thing, when you write your letter.. try and remember to leave your emotions out of it.. I have been learning this the hard way also...

Dear Governor, I wanted to address you with this issue in hopes you can take care of this small matter. rather than the wife and I getting our Senators and Congressmen Involved.. (State your Situation) then before closing let him know your waiting on a reply by a certian time or your letters along with the one you just addressed him with are going on out to your other elected officials... you'll get someone's attention and shortly!!!! and remember it is election time again... gotta **** in some nests to get some action!!!!

Good Luck to you and yours

one other thing.. no matter how FUBAR'D Life can get.. you still have each other!!!!!

I don’t care what level of government your dealing with, local, state, or federal they always try their best to screw you in the ass. They seem to think its fun.

I just spent the last six months dealing with the idiots myself. My Fiancé traveled to her home in South Africa in June to visit her dying father. While she was there she lost her green card. I had to deal with all the idiots at immigrations, my local congressman’s office, and the embassy over in in South Africa. To make a long (and I mean LONG) story short she finally got back December 3rd at an expense of over $10,000 with all the damn long distance phone bills, filing fees to immigrations and the embassy and purchasing new plane tickets for her and her son.

I can feel your pain about being broke at Christmas. To top it all off her ex-husband decides to file a custody suit against her. The **** never sees his son yet he seems to think he was somehow wronged because his son was gone for six months to a foreign country. Ever seen what attorneys charge for a custody battle? Most good ones want $5000 just to start talking to you.

Sorry, didn’t mean to jack your thread, just figured as long as someone was ranting I might as well join in.

I second the motion, on writing to your politicians. I have been working with a friend, helping him get his VA benefits, and GI bill going, He is a veteran, of Desert storm. Two letters, writen in a diplomatic style, got the VA benefits. We are now working on the GI Bill. He has been in college for 1 1/2 years, with no help financially, except free rent, he lives in my spare room. He has Gulf War Syndrome, which he belives was caused by the Anthrax innoculations. I had him write the letters, and then translated them into diplomatic language. If you don't have a diplomatic bone in your body, grow one, or at least find someone who has one to edit your letter before mailing it. Hopefully we will get his GI Bill reinstated before his second year in school, is over.
By the way, he was washed out of the Army, 2 days before he was eligable for the GI bill due to the health problems pertaining to Gulf War Syndrome.

Thanks for the props, suggestions, and support. It's just real hard not to take it personally. I know these peabrains probably do this to everybody, but my impulse is to go off like a rocket, which of course will only make things worse (that's why she's handling it, and not me). We're already compiling a list of who's going to get letters. She writes a damned good letter, too.

Dave, I think I have a diplomatic bone in my body somewheres bro.. but I still gotta let someone else clean up my writing...I toss to much emotion into it and allot of real feelings.. I say it like it is instead of how they would like to read it...

My Bad... but I'll never change, I'll just let someone else put the words where they need to be and leave out the extreme emotion in some.. now talking over the phone I can be pretty diplomatic, until pissed off or on...

I got some websites that may help your buddy Dave??? I think we talked about him before and this before.. but not sure..keep reminding me about the sites bro.. because I have allot going on right now..

You have sent me many sites, which have been used, to prepare the letters, and I have sited the sites, in his letters. They are a big help.
Thanks again.

Cigarick,
Your experience with the DMV and my experience with Kentucky's adoption system are similar. We eventually called our State Senator who called the Cabinet Secretary who called me to see how she could help. Gettting the politicians involved usually works, especially for a one-shot thing like reinstating a license or an adoption.

On another note (threadjack?), this is the kind of thing we conservatives are railing against. Liberals want all kinds of programs but don't seem to care if they really work, or if the people running them are doing their jobs. As a conservative I want to see my government running efficiently. The programs aren't the problem, its the inefficiency! Fire the lazy employees and promote the ones who work hard! If you fix the culture the programs will take care of themselves.

Thank you for your time and attention.

HEAR, HEAR !! ... well said, sir. Though I DO think there are a great many frivolous programs that should be eliminated, greater efficiency in running the show would make all the difference in the world ... in most cases, it's not the programs themselves so much as it is the COST of the programs and that cost is off the top of the charts because of ineffective management and operation ...

Love the thing about Liberals and all of their programs! They also like to do a lot of "committee studies" to investigate those programs before they implement them and they still do not care what the hell happens!

Okay, I wrote the letter, they called her two days later, and over the course of two weeks, two different people promised to call back "before the end of the day," and of course neither did. Finally one of her employers (who just happens to be very well connected both in the national business scene as well as state and federal government) called them, dropped a name or two, and presto: you're released to drive! Of course then we had to deal with the auto insurance all over again, but long story short, she's back on the road as of last Wednesday. Thanks to all for the suggestions.

Interesting facts about seizures: 70% of people who have them never find out why. 70% of those who never find out why they have them, never have another one.

Hey Cigarick,
I have seizers myself. Even one of them caused a wreck, with a parked car. I went into the bar, where the driver, of the parked truck was, and we settled the matter, without getting the insurance company, or police involved. So I didn't have to deal with the crap you and your wife did.
Glad ya'll got your problems worked out.
