i've known and loved a couple of his songs ("dear abby" and "let's talk dirty in hawaiian") for years, but i just recently started listening to more of his music. i'm curious about his story in general (i'll start googling, too) and also looking for suggestions on songs of his to check out.

There's a hole in Daddy's arm where all our money goes
Jesus Christ died for all our sins, dontcha' know....

My roomie and I would spend hours listening to John Prine and Jerry Jeff Walker. They were a couple of great folk/country/rock poets.
For both of these guys, if you're going to buy any of their music I would recommend starting with their oldest stuff. As their careers progressed, I felt that they lost the "edginess" evident in their early stuff.

thanks, guys. yeah, i was thinking that john prine's music all had this humorous edge to it, but tunes like the one you quoted ("same stone") can get pretty serious -- it's a long way from "let's talk dirty in hawaiian" all right! :)
