What are the pros and cons of smoking in my car?

I have a semi-collectible car (87 Buick Turbo T) that has never been smoked in. I have one client I drive to about 2x/mo. that's 1 hr + each way. That seems to me to be about perfect for a corona or even lonsdale size smoke.

Do cigars leave an ugly smell in the car that persists for days/weeks/months? The commute I'm talking about is inland So. Cal., so that means periodic stop-n-go with breaks up to 75mph (while tailgating the driver in front, naturally). Is a cigar too big a distraction for this kind of driving? Will I step out of my car smelling funky?

TIA,

i smoke in my car and when one of my sons borrows the car for the weekend, he has to spray the inside to keep the smell from making him cry.

i use an ionizer, which apparently doesn't do any good.
if you smoke in your car the smell of cigars will be permanent.

personally i don't care, but if you don't want the smell, don't smoke in the car.

You will step out of your car smelling like smoke. I smoke to and from work and air my car out every day. The smoke smell stays like Rick said regardless of what I do.

Although I have never tried this I have heard that spraying the seats (if fabric) carpets, mats, headliner, etc. with Febreeze this will eliminate all offensive odors.

I drink, ehrr, smoke cigars in my Jeep ALL the time. I keep most of my windows at least partially open, the cigar away from the draft so it doesn't burn unevenly, empty the ashtray after I'm done , and part my hair (again) when I get out. Oh yes, keep the ash small otherwise you'll ruin nice jackets/pants, and the upholstery-- I know.

The only pro of smoking a cigar in your car is that you will feel that you have put the travel time to good use.

The list of cons is far longer:
[1] your wife or girlfriend will complain about how the car smells when she rides somewhere with you;
[2] if you smoke the cigar on the way to the client meeting you will arrive smelling like a cigar, something the client might not like even if they say it doesn't matter;
[3] cigar ashes in the car are a problem not only because there is so much, but because every time you open the door or turn on the vent, the breeze will blow the finer particles around inside the car covering you and everything else with a fine gray ash;
[4] the volume of smoke from a cigar will almost require you to crack a window or open the roof vent, leading to more free floating ashes, especially if you are like me and drive at speeds north of 75mph most of the time;
[5] some guys are expert at keeping 2 or 3 inches of ash on a good cigar, but they aren't driving 75 while doing it. if the ash falls off the cigar into your lap while driving you could wind up with a hole in your trousers, a serious burn, a hole in the upholstery, or all three, not to mention the very real possiblity of wrecking your vintage car while trying to aviod the hot coal...

I speak from experience. Each of the first four things have happened to me as a result of smoking a cigar in the car. Number five was related to me by a very good friend who, at the time, was wearing a pair of polyester pants when the ash fell off his cigar. By the time he got the car stopped he was almost naked because the polyester caught fire.

My advice: don't do it!

That strange... I do most of my cigar smoking while traveling/driving.
I don't carack all the windows, just on side to create a circular draft. My car doesn't 'reek' afterwards either.
I bought a Ozone style Ionizer, and it works great! The car never stinks from my wife closing up the car while smoking (before giving it a chance to 'air out'). It has to be the best spent money of 2003... except for the 33% off steal I got here, once...

I spend an awful lot of time in the car to and from client calls. I don't smoke between calls but I have been known to do it on a long trip home. My last truck had cloth seats and it stunk, ionizer, air fresheners, febreeze and windows down. I bought a new truck w/leather sets and use an ionizer and no more smell. I did have a situation once where I had, so I thought just closed a deal worth substantial profit, so I stopped at a local shop and picked up a Partagas Black. I lit the damn thing and my phone rang, it was my customer. He had some questions about his order so, being close to his office still I decided to just go there and answer them. When I got there I left my gar in the ashtray and went inside. He came out to greet me, extended his hand for me to shake and before he got too close he apparently got a good blast of my gar and jumped back, tripped over a table in the lobby and put a large gash in his arm. So there he is bleeding and all I can think of is the Partagas Black still burning in my ashtray. Still made the sale and half gagging on my gar due to laughing drove home and enjoyed my smoke. Embarrassing moment.

Sorry it's so long

Leather is the key. Cloth will absorb the stink. Even with the leather, it will still stink a bit, especially if you leave the ashes in the car. After a good cleaning, it should be fine (but still slightly noticable to people with sensitive noses). We all know that all us cigar smokers have cinged all the hairs in our noses trying to light up that last little nub... so we can't sniff as well as we used to.

I don't make a habit of it, but when I simply have to, I turn the fan on low, crack the rear windows, and use air fresheners liberally. The smell is gone in a few days.
