Bear with me guys, I'm a greenie. I'd like your thoughts on Avo, Onyx and La Gloria Cubana Wavell Maduro. Been watching your posts for the last week and I think your are all nuts (I love this place). Steve (thanks Floyd)

Welcome to the madhouse, LaGloriaCubana Wavell and Torpedo are two of my favorite smokes, along with: Partagas Black Label(newly added to favs), Indian Tabac Boxer Maduro, Padron 3000, Onyx Reserve Robusto (great) and 5 Vegas Torpedo, Excalibur no. III to name a few! I like the more robust cigars and you might also like Mayorga. These that I have listed are all reasonably priced cigars! If you want a list of dog rockets simply look to Acid line! Charlie

My two cents...

Never tried an AVO, really don't care for the entire La Gloria Cubana line (especially the serie r), but the Onyx Reserve is a top notch smoke. I'm not a fan of their regular brand or the Onyx Vintage. Get your hands on some of those Reserves though. For the price it's probably the best smoke on the market.

The AVO XO has a very unique flavor - medium body -I like it. The AVO Domaine line is fuller bodied and VERY tasty. LGC maduro's are good to very good, especially the Wavell and Charlemagne. LGC can have construction problems in other models.

Hey Charlie, I had my free Partagas Black over the weekend. I liked it, but thought it was very one dimensional, like the rest of their line. If all the Blacks are like the one I had there's a million other maduro's I like better....well maybe only twelve.

Onyx ... all 'dog rockets'... I can't stand them. See? Everyone is going to give you something different ... because cigars are very subjective.

My suggestion ... buy a few different 5-packs of the ones you see the majority raving about, but because of that very reason, expect over-bidding ... ;)

Onyx reserve robusto is my favorite cigar. I can taste and smell a faint aroma of chocalate. Fill your humidor with them. Be sure to use a v-cutter.

Onyx have a construction inconsistancy problem throughout all their lines. LGC maduro wavell, one to always have on hand. Indian Tabac Maduro Boxer is another. AVO maduro's are crap, but their natural dominicans are tasty. And Slimboli just got out of the institution and probably is not taking his meds.

Welcome; you won't find this board dull and will get some good info, too. I agree with Charlie on the Indian Tabac Maduros and the Padrons (especially the Padrons).

Agree with Slim on the Onyx Reserves (that is the one I was talking about) and the other Onyx lines are pretty sad! Try lots of different smokes till you get to what you like. I happen to like Robustos and Torpedos or Pyramids. Ring of 48 and higher and do enjoy Maduros, but in some lines they are not preferred! AVO is a good example of a line with Maduros that are less than adequate. Meanie, better call Slimbolis keeper and tell them he escaped! Ha! Charlie

Welcome to the boards :) My thoughts (you can't avoid them, try as you may) on Avo; not a bad stick, I like the Ashton for the money better (or even Ashton Cabinet). On Onyx; not much going on here. The Onyx Reserve is just like a Fittipaldi Maduro or an Indian Tabac Maduro Fuerte (or whatever the hell they call them now). On the LGC Maduro; always a good smoke. Avoid the Series R Natural --friggin' dogrocket.

Thanks for all the info. Looks like I'm going to be a 5 pack guy for a while until I find exactly what I like. No more cheap no name bundles. I was actually smoking one of the no names last week and all of a sudden started getting some unique flavor. My excitement didn't last long though, I realized I was smoking the band. Gods truth. LOL! Maybe you should take all your old bands, then put them on the dogrockets, the whole length, and smoke them that way for a continually changing "unique" flavor. The red ink is my favorite ;)

I like all the LGC line in maduro. The Onyx are a bit mild. Haven't had a Black label yet but am not a fan of other Partagas I've tried. Glenn

Being fairly new to all of this myself I feel you have received excellent advice here. I have been buying 5 packs of stuff I want to try and samplers from brands that I know I like. By getting the samplers I am able to determine what sizes and wrappers I like. It looks to me that you are on the right track. The AVO Domaine #50 has been one of my more favorite smokes. I have also have one of the LGC Wavells and throughly enjoyed it. Better have a good credit limit on that card once you start here.

Heg, I think you are on to something!!!!! Instead of buying cigars I should get you guys to send me your old bands. Prefer cuban but I agree that the red taste the best. Steve

The cedar sleeves, like on the Indian Tabac Bear, burn with a better aroma than the bands. Barry

Give the Players Club by Don Diego a try. I'm still experimenting too trying to find my favorites. It's a great smoke for the money, about $6 a stick. I've seen these in 5- packs.
