AN ONLINE marketing site involving a man in a chicken suit is apparently pulling the punters and now has a cult following.
The Subservient Chicken site is designed to peddle burgers for Burger King, and allows users to see what they eat before it is killed, sliced and shoved between two slices of bread.
Dreamed up by the people that bought you the Mini Cooper promotions, the site which allows users to order a man in a chicken suit to move about, has received a million hits in 24 hours. This was before the site itself was even advertised.
On the site is a frame that looks like a web cam with a text box underneath saying "Get chicken just the way you like it. Type your command here."
In the webcam frame, there's a man in a chicken suit with furniture and a TV. The "chicken" obeys any command which is not too rude.
However behind the scenes there is some clever zen programming. There is no chicken. The site is a keyword database, a bunch of servers, and multiple Flash video clips of the man in the chicken suit.
So how does a purveyor of meat sandwiches benefit from all this? In marketing terms the idea is to get people talking about Burger King’s new site. [Damn] µ
