...one hour at a time!

Have any of you bite the bullet and hired a trainer?

I'm in my 3rd week of M/W/F for an hour per session. Warm up for 5-15 mins depending on what time I make it to the gym, then 30 mins of cardio afterward.

I'm dying...

1] How long did you have a trainer?

2] I will assume that you did a full body workout...but did you do more weight training or something else?

3] How long before you saw results?

4] Were your results what you expected?

5] Is there any particular program that you used to drop the fat?

HELP!!!

Encouragement, I need encouragement...just let me know that there is a Haagen-Daaz at the end of the tunnel!!!

Now, where's that muscle rub..............Marla

How long until we can see your results... J/K.

I've never had a physcial trainer, but I do train in martial arts and also train in various other weaopons courses. I know from experience what it's like to get pushed beyond your comfort zone and the panic that can come with it.

As for comfort... I dont have much for you there.

been there...

I had a trainer until I started to lift more than him. He got pissed and did not want to play with me anymore.

I worked out 4-5 days a week. Cardio at each work out and then weight training. I alternated Chest and Bi's, Back and Thighs. This helped not to over do any particular part of the body.

After weights, I did a little cardio like a bike to cool down.

It took a while to see results, but it is worth it. Do NOT get discouraged. Body's don't go flabby over night and they wont get toned over night either.

Diet is important too. Watch the carbs. You'll need enough to keep you going, but dont pile on the pasta unless you are running a marathon. Eat plenty of protien, this will help build muscle.

You cant spot loose fat so dont try. Cardio + weights are the best way to get in and stay in shape. Cardio-sex is great too. I will give you some personal instruction there:-)

Remember muscle weighs more than fat so DON'T be concerned with what the scale says. Did your trainer do a body/fat ratio check? Keep an eye on that and remember women naturally have more fat then men.

Muscle naturally burns fat by just sitting there. In other words, just by sitting watching TV the more muscle you have the more fat will be burned just sitting there. So don't fear bulking up and getting all muscley.

Additionally, post pics. Before, during and after. This will help us sweat so we can all loose weight together. You can continue to send the XXX to me personally:-)

Congratulations on your life changing decision!

Last week I tore an ab muscle...very painful, but it's healing.

I am having extreme difficulty in the area of my surgery (TAH - Total Ab Hysterectomy), from hipbone to hipbone. :(

But especially in the area of my Iliopsoas and Pectineus...mainly my hip flexors.

I have such bad scar tissue forming inwardly, that it is pulling on those particular muscles causing me great discomfort and difficulty in working out.

Today, I strected each side for 5 mins each. Not an easy task. I actually became nauseated and light headed due to the pain and had to back off a bit.

Tonight, I going to a YOGA class...I need to get beyond this and get back into shape.

I just wonder what others have done, especially after injuries/surgeries...

Marla, If you are starting up weight training, you are going to be sore for at LEAST a couple weeks. Maybe longer. You will see a difference in muscle tone within 2 months. Even light weight training, done correctly, will show good results. Your trainer likely knows his/her stuff. Do as you're told! Lastly, don't obsess over the scale. Lean muscle weighs more than fat. You may actually GAIN a little weight at first. I would advise you STAY OFF the scale(yeah right!). Look in the mirror and mark the changes instead.

Rich,

Darling. You crack me up!

Cardio sex = alternating chest and bi's, back and thighs, right? I'm so there...just give me a moment to warm up!

Yeah, I watch what I eat...I watch it go straight to my fat ass!

My fat ratio is top secret at this point!!! I'm so embarrassed!

I'm not getting on an evil scale either! I just go by how my clothes are fitting...ugh!

Anyway, pics? Nope...even I'm grossed out!

Ouch, sounds like you're not having too much fun now E! Sorry to hear it.

I've been into weight lifting for several years now and pretty much jumped into it on my own (trial and plenty of error along the way!). I've recently had four knee operations and I know that the stronger I am BEFORE the operation the faster I'll recover (yea, great wisdom AFTER the fact, huh?!).

But for a recovery like yours, wow! Sorry I can't offer any help. Good luck with it. Just remember whatever you do go real slow (another lesson I learned by the 'oops' method!!).

Best wishes blown in the form of smokerings, comin at ya' Marla. Just reading your description of where the pain is....makes me cringe.

I have heard that all ab-excersises that work the sides of the abs....are the best. Many people overlook the area from the armpit, down along your sides(ribs), and ending at the bellybutton.

A speediferous recovery to you, Marla.

What are you goals?

If you pulled an ab muscle in week three, you may have the wrong trainer. He should take your surgery into account before pushing you too hard. Injuries are usually the result of over-doing some aspect of the workout.

You should pick a totally unrelated activity to do on day four--three isn't enough. The most you should skip is one day at a time.

Don't make the mistake of eating too little, or going on that dreadful Atkins diet. Eating a balanced diet but less of everything is better than ODing on cholesterol and fat.

If you doing enough cardio, you should already feel the difference, physical recovery aside. I ride a stationary bike in the morning and I feel better on all fronts when I do.

Don't quit.

If you want to gain muscle you weight lift.

If you want to lose fat do the Atkins diet.

I'm doing both and saw results in two weeks.

Marla,

The only part of that whole thing I can relate to lately is the "muscle rub". I try to get the muscle rubbed as often as I can.

I'm going to be serious for a change throughout this response, because I want to encourage you.

Yes, after my surgery a few years ago I hires a trainer who helped me get back into shape. I lost a lot of mass and put on fat and water weight due to medications. We worked together with the understanding that I knew what I was talking about; he was more of a coach to me. Noticeable results occurred in five weeks. Here's what I recommend:

1) Allow yourself one day per week for splurging. I've got my wife on this (she wanted to) and it helps. Be strict six days per week and reward yourself with your favorite treat at the end of the week. Having been trained as a chef, I know what to prepare for my wife and others who are watching their intake. Personally I don't consume more than 20 gms of fat per day (in every form combined). I eat lots of white meat, fish, seafood, egg whites, liver and eat red meat once a week. I eat plenty of veggies (not peas or corn too much) and drink a lot of skim milk. My wife does the same. She can do it because of the reward system. If she is craving sweets, I tell her to brush her teeth (toothpaste helps). We eat slowly. If we're hungry in between meals we wait 30 mins to see if it will pass, if not, we eat something healthy (pretzels and milk; baked tortilla chips and picante salsa, etc). If you make a mistake move beyond it;it's no the end of the world!

2] Yes, I do full body workouts with weights ; two body parts per day (that are complimentary back and bis or chest and tris, etc) I do cardio at night.

My results and my wife's are better than expected. Here's a helper. Buy an article of clothing that you want (make it expensive), but buy it in your goal size. This will encourage you to get to your goal. Don't weigh yourself everyday, maybe once per week. Rather use BMI it is more accurate and rewarding because weight fluctuates.

DON'T GIVE UP!!!! YOU CAN DO IT. I'VE READ YOUR POSTS AND CAN TELL YOU ARE AN INDEPENDENT DETERMINED WOMAN; YOU ARE CAPABLE OF REACHING YOUR WEIGHT!!! Ask your man to encourage you as well.

If you want some quick easy ideas of what to cook let me know and I'll email you with some recipes. Also learn to love the pain. As awful as that sounds, make it a love/hate relationship.

I wish you the best in your endeavor.

I can't believe I have to be serious!!!

Marla 6 - 8 weeks to see results, keep at it! Lift weights AND do 20-30 Minutes of cardio a day. (yes ANY kind will be just fine). I have just started to bike to work 11.5 miles one way, and it is tought to get back at it. Bike, swim, run then you can do tri's with me.
Rob

Then put the pink thingy back on and light one up and send me the new pic :)

I use the building I work in to work out. On Monday, Wednesday and Friday, I do 3 sets of 35 pushups, and 3 sets of 10 pullups, twice a day with brisk walking between sets.

Then Tuesdays and Thursdays it's stairs, up 14 flights and then crunches. 3 Times a day. Seems to be working pretty well combined with a salad for lunch and a light dinner. I'm getting cut up. My waist is down to a 34 and my chest is up to a 45. Not bad for an old man...

You haven't posted any responses to this. Is your trainer making you do arms to the point where they feel like their going to drop off?

Great posts!

Thank you!

My main goal at this time is just to keep MOVING!

After nearly two years of absolutely NO gym time, and recovering from 3 injuries and 1 surgery, I'm in miserable shape!

Everything went from firm to round...yeah, even the C's went to D's...at least the titty-fairy blesses you when you get fat, LOL! Well, at least when you are female...

My goal, seriously, is for overall toning with slight muscle gain, loss of evil fat, and to regain endurance.

I don't like to be skin and bones. Hell, I don't even like to be at my "optimum" weight. I like a little pudge, say 5 pounds over what the so-called experts say I should weigh. And if Momma is happy, everybody is happy!

I did my cardio today since I worked out with my trainer on Thursday. She went to Palm Springs for the weekend so we switched the days...but I think that I'm going to add another day due to your prodding!

Mike is VERY supportive of me and is doing great with his trainer. My trainer has experienced the same injuries and abdominal surgery as me, so she is well aware of what I can and cannot do. It was an accident that I tore a muscle. I was just moving too quickly and lost my balance.

Yesterday, I finally had a moment where I felt as if things were turning around! I am feeling so much better now that I'm doing something. A sedentary (sp) life is NOT living!!!

Now, MOVE YOUR BUTTS!................Marla
