I know we have done this before, but time to update the listing for the "newbies"! What are the worst cigars you have had the displeasure of smoking over the last few months. Don't be ashamed.........here goes a few that I have encountered: Legion Robusto (as listed in previous post), an aged Hamilton House that I found in one of my humidors (no improvement), Lone Wolf Churchill (taseless and bland), Dark Shark Corona (stunk up my car)! You will notice from my listing that experimenting to find an everyday, low cost smoke has its drawbacks! Charlie

Por Larranga and Santa Damiana...Pure crap (IMHO of course)...I really haven't smoked anything else lately that I didn't like...I have a separate humidor full of dogrocket sticks that I just won't ever smoke...WIth the way the world is right now, I have only been smoking my usual favorites and other lines that I know are excellent cigars (such as Fuente Anejos #46 and #49s, for example)

Keith, you have great taste in cigars, but the reason for the post was to let the newbies know what to avoid, and since I am always trying to find some kind of "bargain" smoke, I have uncovered some real tobacco wrapped t--ds! Charlie

To newbies from a newbie. I was warned but didn't listen about the Ashcroftes (sorry I didn't take your advice Floyd). I WON a bundle of the Corona #3's for $10 thinking that they would be fine for work where I rarely get to smoke an entire cigar. Have smoked (actually tried to smoke) half of them and could get any draw on only 1-2, and they weren't worth the effort. Another thing you'll learn here is what alot of what these guys call crap is actually pretty smokable to our uneducated palettes (sp?). My tastes are improving and I wish I could smoke R&J's, Onyz or CAO LaAnniversaries all day long but that won't happen in my lifetime. Good post Charlie and I hope everyone only lists true garbage and not what they think is politically correct for this BB. A hamburger is crap compared to a fillet mignon, but sometimes a juicy grilled burger just hits the spot. Steve

I've heard that "fillet vs hamburger" description before. I think it's a terrible comparison. Although a burger is beef, it's a totally different entity than a fine fillet. You can't compare two cigars that way. You could use it to compare a cigar to chewing tobacco, or to a cigarette, but not to another cigar. Use another comparison, such as Britney Spears to some Afghan chick...

How about Ford vs Cadilac, beer vs scotch, Blockbuster Video vs club seats at pro sports events, Levi's vs Armani, the lake vs Europe, Wendy's vs dinner at THE CLUB, 18 holes at the local public course vs a weekend at St. Andrews Old Course? My only point is I can afford the first one of all of the above on regular basis and the second once in a while, but I would never call hamburger, Fords, beer, Blockbuster Video, Levi's, vacation at the lake, lunch at Wendy's or 18 holes with my buddies at my local course CRAP! If I smoked one cigar a day I would smoke MUCH better cigars. BTW, I will never get Britney so the money I am saving smoking the Ashcroftes will pay for my vacation to the new U.S. protected Kabul. Occasionally I smoke one of the cigars that I hoped would improve with age, but have not - Lone Wolf, Dark Sharks, Black Stallions, Warhol and Hoya de Nicarauga don't get any better with age(the Hoya de N. have some flavor, but the draw has been so consistently poor they are not worth the effort). All of these were inexpensive, but did not turn out to be a bargain, IMHO.

woodbutchr: it's your scenario and you can make any comparisons you want. i like toby's caddy but i'd rather drive my chrysler. scotch? i have a bottle of 30 year old scotch, actually it's a bottle of 12 year old johnny walker black label that i bought 30 years ago. do i add the years together or divide by 4? when i played golf i would buy a dozen balls and leave the course when i lost them all. once i completed the front nine but i never completed the back 5. wendy's? to square for my taste. levi's? too expensive. go the the korean tee shirt store in your area and buy the sweatpants for $9.00, if you are handy, you can make another pocket in the back with the bottoms you cut off. don't forget to sew some velcro in the pockets so you don't lose your keys or lighter. my family spent over 10 years at lake havasu, actually only five because we spent half the time in the mobile home. Britney? a pedophile's dream. toby and i had decent seats at the forum during the magic era. now i tape the games and watch them in slow motion so we can keep up with the action.
i like asahi beer. it reminds me of my time in japan in the early 50's when the young japanese woman brought the beer and sat down to talk. but that is another story.

Rick, the purpose of my first post was to let the other new guys/gals (?) know not to be intimidated by all of your opinions and to enjoy what they like no matter what other people think. If you read it again I talk about "our uneducated palettes (sp?)". Let us/Help us educate it without calling everything we smoke a "dog rocket".

My second post was to bug Tailgater. Sorry Keith, your still in the group with my all American hero's. Steve

steve: i never call a cigar, the product of someone's labor, a dog rocket, like some of the unappreciative posters. if you smoke it and you like it, you are there. like the hamburger, you might want a little of this and a litle of that later. i like to dip mine in blue cheese dressing, of course it makes it hard to light.

Steve, I understand your point, but in ignoring others' experiences with the cigars sold here, I have collected a sizeable collection of really bad cigars, even at "hamburger" prices. Some of the bad reviews I do not agree with, but for the most part, I find them right on.

You could let a Lone Wolf age for 20 years and it is still going to be a dull, tasteless dog rocket! No question about that. Now as far as Britany vs Madonna, I will take Madonna any day! Where are we going with this post? Has been fun! Charlie

An added word of caution: A cigar last year may be different than it is today. Watch close-outs -- a cigar that may have been good during the "boom" but is now selling at rock-bottom prices may be there because the manufacturer compromised quality in the lean years and now can't give them away. OR, they could be the premium they've always been and the present close-out is all they've got left. Varying examples: Tamboril. These days you hear horrible things about this cigar. I agree the red label is not good, and it may have never been, but the white label during the boom was one of my favorites. I got a box just as they began their decline, so I got premium-made cigars at a great price. I've got a few left of that 3-year old box, and they're really good. But now the current Tamborils don't seem to be the same cigar. I'm guessing quality dropped as pricing dropped. A different example: Flor de Florez. I smoked these during the "boom", another favorite, at $6 or $7 each. They're rock-bottom now but are still a pretty decent cigar. Quality isn't quite where it used to be, but now I'd say this is a great bargain cigar. One more (and I have friends that give me a hard time over this one): Carlin. This cigar is cheap now but I think the quality is still there. If this is a close-out (I'm not sure), maybe they haven't gone through the well-made stuff yet, or maybe they'll stop when the present stuff is gone. Ask here when you're not sure!

Habana Gold is a good example of what was a good or decent cigar and I have bought some of the 5 packs and found them to be lacking in every way as compared to the Habana Gold's of 4 or 5 years ago! Charlie

Thanks Rick, that was really my only point. If you like it SMOKE IT!!!! BTW Try dipping the other end and using french dressing, it will give you a sweeter finish.

Mmay, I agree 100%! I keep a running log of all of the reco's of the regulars. I just don't want someone new to cigars to read all of the posts and think they have no taste and should give up smoking cigars (as I thought a couple of months ago).

I'll agree with Cliff on the Flor de Florez, not a bad smoke and always inexpensive. Now the V Centennial? Short smoke of my life. Lit it, puffed it once, spewed ashes all over my front lawn giving it the overhand toss.
