Maryland Governor 'Debunks' Multiculturalism

Friday, May 21, 2004

ANNAPOLIS, Md. — A Maryland McDonald's restaurant may seem like an unlikely place for a battle over multiculturalism (search), but it has become just that. The controversy was sparked when the state's Democratic comptroller tried to order a meal, but couldn't because the clerk spoke Spanish.

The comptroller, former Maryland Democratic Gov. William Donald Schaefer (search), described it as an affront to American assimilation and was criticized for attacking multiculturalism.

"Most public officials won't speak up; they're worried about the vote. Well, it's about time somebody said something about America," said Schaefer, who declared he would not eat at another McDonald's.

Maryland's Republican Gov. Robert Ehrlich (search) used the controversy to weigh in on the broader issue of multiculturalism and the role he says it plays in undermining the American melting plot.

Most politicians try to avoid the topic of multiculturalism, believing that it is too controversial and likely to attract editorial condemnation. Schaefer, however, is undeterred, even bringing bumper stickers to a press conference on Wednesday that said: "Schaefer: He Says What You Think."

Late 80's I took a bike ride to Key West.

Stopped outside of Miami to fill up the tank and get a soda at a 7-11. A friend of mine wanted a pack of smoke while I was in the store. I ask for his brand and want to settle up with the clerk. He gives me this shoulder shrug and tells me "No Engles"

The line from "Pulp Fiction" says it all...

Foreign people must learn to speak English here in America. Forget being tolerant! Apply the same methods that are used anywhere else in the world! Wann buy something? Learn the lingo! Wanna go somewhere? Learn the lingo!

The constant bowing down and caving in to people that can't even speak English on American soil side-by-side with Americans that were BORN here has got to stop! Enough with the double language issues...it's bankrupting the province of Quebec! The savings in printing costs alone is staggering!

Don't like it...too bad!

I lived in the Phillipines for 3 and a half years. Didn't plan on staying... just had to be there for three years... SO I LEARNED ENOUGH OF THE LANGUAGE TO COMMUNICATE!!!

If you're going to LIVE here. Speak the friggin' language for cryin'out loud.

I was in Spain for a few weeks in September for business. I speak very little Spanish - just enough to know what I'm asking for. I cant form sentences very well.

When I went in to a restaurant to order, I had a little difficulty. However, the people were unbelievably patient with me. Some of the friendliest people I have ever met. Excellent time.

If I had to stay there long-term, I'd learn the native language. Since I was only there for a few weeks, I'm glad they were understanding.

Basically it means when I lived in Chile for three years I had to learn their language, not just accept that everyone else should adapt to me.

And the clerk was automatically Mexican since his/her language was Spanish??????????

Most of us are descendants of immigrants from non-English speaking countries. When my grandparents came here they didn't speak English either. They went to work in areas that the population MOSTLY spoke the same language. Over time, they learnt English and were better able to assimilate into the existing population.

By the way, this person may have been from Puerto Rico and would be considered as American as you and me.

Soon California's population will be more than 50% latino. The language of the majority will be Spanish.

Yup... and they teach in our schools in spanish. In my opinion, they should teach in english. It will only benefit the children to speak two languages, and I think you harm them economically if they don't learn english.

barry,
"Most of us are descendants of immigrants from non-English speaking countries."

Most of you maybe and even at that, those who came from Europe probably had a fair amount of english that they spoke. : )
My descendants were here and didn't speak english either, but adapted and learned english to do trade and communicate with those who they encountered.

It really doesn't matter where a person is from, if they come to the US, they should learn to speak english. Plain and simple. The US should not cater to those who don't speak english. They should be given an opertunity to learn english, but they shouldn't allow translaters in schools, motor vehicle offices and other govt offices. If you walk into a store where the clerk doesn't speak enough english to communicate, then a person shouldn't do business with them.

Pretty soon, at the rate things are going, spanish will become the primary language and those of us who don't speak it will find ourselves having difficulty communicating in our own country. Yeah, that makes alot of sense.

It kills me everytime I call someplace and it says "for English, press 1".
Why should anyone have to press anything?
Why isn't it, "For Spanish, press 1"??
Or, maybe it should be, "For Spanish, call someone else." That'd be alot better. ; )
