Bush keeps Saddam's gun in White House

clutching when U.S. forces captured him in a hole in Iraq last December is now kept by President
Bush at the White House, Time magazine reported Sunday.

Military officials had the pistol mounted after it was seized from Saddam near his hometown of Tikrit last year, and soldiers involved in the capture gave it to Bush in a private meeting, Time said.

The magazine quoted a visitor who had been shown the gun, which is kept in a small study off the Oval Office where Bush displays memorabilia. It is the same room where former President Clinton had some of his encounters with former intern Monica Lewinsky.

Bush shows Saddam's gun to select visitors, telling them it is unloaded, both now and when Saddam was captured, Time reported.

"He really liked showing it off," Time quoted a visitor who had seen the gun as saying. "He was
really proud of it."

A White House spokesman was not immediately available for comment.

When I heard this story, an image of Dubya marching around the oval office chanting ... "this is my rifle, this is my gun, this is for fighting this is for fun".... came to mind.

Pretty cool, I had heard this on local news too. I wonder what type it is. I sure wouldn't mind having some of the Mausers he used to fire into the air to celebrate, well, himself!

Good luck hog, that would be awesome if you could build that for him!

Evidently Saddam Hussien did not hear Charlten Heston's speech, nor did he belong to the NRA. Hmmmm I wonder if he joined AARP, he could have got a discount on his legal fees. JonR

X,
as for the reason of taking Souvenir's this is General Order #1.. the reason for this General Order is because what these young men and women do not realize is something they pick up as such "souvenir" could in fact be deadly. thus this last years explosion on the USS Sipan.. and a Marine in prison because of such.. I do not have the direct link to what happened.. but this is the reasoning behind this order.. for the Presidents case I am sure and as the article reads.. this gun was empty with no live rounds, and I am sure it had passed through many experts hands before it reached the Presidents...

I sent the man an email.. most I could get back is a thanks for my response... and some other writings as to "I'm going to wheel this around like General Patton did his side arms just to piss of Rickamaven" now wouldn't that just be a kicker???

Thank you for e-mailing President Bush. Your ideas and comments are very important to him.

Because of the large volume of e-mail received, the President cannot personally respond to each message. However, the White House staff considers and reports citizen ideas and concerns.

hmmmm

428cj, the most famous footage of Saddam shooting a rifle shows what appears to be a Mannlicher-Schonauer, not a Mauser. Just FYI :)

Thanks for the post rick. I think that's kinda cool. Of course exceptions can be made for the President. Ain't you people ever heard of RHIP??

Hog... don't feel like you're pissin' in the wind, do ya??

GW will never hear of your offer to build a shadowbox for that thing. Sad, but true.

Yep Macs, in a way I do.. but hey you never know.. the effort and thought was made....

Just picked up some Nice pieces of lumber today that would fit this event perfectly... either Spalted Maple or Spalted Hackberry would make a beautiful shadowbox to hold this Relic...

Hey CWFoster, thanks for the info. Not really sure which video (out of the MANY!) you're refering to.
I saw one though a few years ago where he was given a Persian Mauser as a gift (can't remember who gave it to him, just focused on the rifle's details that were mentioned). Unfortunately it was cut down from original, grrrrrrr. I would have loved to do a 'Mauser rescue' and given it a better home. Haha.
