San Francisco, CA, Jun. 21 (UPI) -- A plan is being considered that allow non-citizens, including illegal immigrants, to vote in San Francisco school board elections.

The San Jose Mercury News said Monday the proposed November ballot measure was aimed at getting more parents involved in their children's education by waiving California's requirement that voters be U.S. citizens.

San Francisco has long been a home to a large Asian immigrant community as well as growing numbers of Latinos. Only those non-citizens with children in public school would be allowed to vote, and only in school board elections.

The Mercury said a similar proposal that would have allowed immigrants to vote in all municipal elections was rejected in 1996 by a judge who ruled the move would require an amendment to the state constitution.

If passed, the measure would be the first in California, although similar laws have been enacted in New York, Chicago and Maryland.

That's just too far... you have to be a citizen to have input. Or be president. (Arnie, I'm looking in your direction).

it would not suprise me if S.F. proposed a bill that force citizens to hand over their homes to the homeless. I love that city more than any place in the world, but the people that run it are flat out crazy. I had considered moving there since I spent forty five days there last year (going to concerts and such) but I think I stay up here in good ole conservative Republican north valley CA

Interesting how this Republican writer from New York speculates that immigrants would be more likely to vote Republican.

I don't care if they stuff the ballots for GWB, I still don't like the idea. I have no problem with allowing people in, legally or illegally, if they want to work and participate in society, thats fine. I don't even care if they learn english...that being said, I think that if you want to participate in the system, you should take the steps to become a citizen of the country. I lived in another country for three years and was denied many rights as I was not a citizen. I understood why, I have no rights to vote or recieve government assistance when I haven't properly aligned myself with their country. I would even be o.k. if we made it easier to become a citizen, but at least make sure those who recieve government benefits such as schooling and medicine are legal.
