I was watching the Cubs game last night and the question came up, "Has any one batter caused three outs in one inning?" I looked at the Baseball Almanac site and I couldn't find any info on this stat. Three hits in one inning is the record but nothing on outs.

Technically, in the case of a triple play, the batter causes the triple play by hitting the ball, but as far as to one guy striking out three times in one inning or hitting a grounder to short and being thrown out, stiking out and flying out or whatever................I will go so far as to say No and it would be almost impossible for a team to bat around three times to give the guy that opportunity!

Hi Charlie,

They really only have to have 19 batters. The guy would have to be the first and last player to bat. Here is some info that I've dugup in my search for an answer. I don't think that it has ever happened. It looks like the most hitters faced in one inning is 20.

"1989 - One Inning, 20 Hitters, 16 Hits
The Cincinnati Reds had one of the biggest innings in baseball history, sendng a record 20 hitters to the plate in the first inning of an 18-2 win over the Houston Astros. They also set records for most hits in an inning with 16, most singles in an inning with 12, and most players to collect two hits in an inning, 7. "

I can't find the box score to see who did what for this game. I'll keep digging.....

Great post to do some "research" based on! Whoops horrible sentence structure! Ms London would spank me for that one.

The runs scored in one inning for that game still stands.

What about most strike-outs in an inning?
Has anyone every thrown 4 in a single inning?

It's so rare for a player to make it safely to first after the third strike gets by a catcher, I'm curious if it has ever been accomplished in an inning when the pitcher also struck out the side.???

Tailgater,
yes there have been cases of 4 stirkeouts in an inning.
I cannot remember the specific game, but it was in the mid 70s and the first two batters were struck out, the third was walked, the forth swung on a wild pitch and got away from the catcher and made it to first, then the next batter was struck out.

I wish I could remember when it was, but I am thinking that it had to be a Boston game.

That'd be a feat.
It would require a minimum of 19 ABs in one inning.
Not to mention the odds of that one person being the only one of those to create an out.

Figuring that the record for most ABs in a 9 inning game is 8 ABs and all of those record ABs were done before 1900. Since then, no one has reached the 8 ABs per 9 innings, so it would be a pretty safe bet that it hasn't been done.

That should say the most ABs per 9 innings by ONE person is 8 ABs.
