Shortly after the birth of our first, my in-laws came to visit. After dinner one evening my mother-in-law handed me a small package, wrapped in newspaper. When I opened it I found a 5-pack of Hava-Tampa Jewels. I didn't smoke cigars or anything then because I had quit during the pregnancy and sworn an oath not to start until the kid was in college (a promise I kept). I looked at her and said, "Thanks, but you know I've quit smoking." "But I heard, "she said, "that you said I was a 5-cigar mother-in-law." Well, I had said. And I still don't know who told her I had. But I've been a damn nice son-in-law to her since. And she's been a great mother-in-law.
