Windows XP..

surfing the other night off yahoo search, opened up a web site and instintly about 4-5 other web browsers opened up and **** started downloading to the computer...

after running no adware and uninstalling my Norton System Craps and installing Panda this is when these viruses were caught by Panda and there were about 6 of them.. but the problem now is whatever worm got in.. it has taken over the PC... I cannot get online with it.. nor even use the task bar or start menu programs... using goback did not help either.. It will not even boot up in safe mode nor in dos...

anyone have any idea how I can recover in Win XP without losing all my info???

btw I'm on the wifes laptop for now LOL

Thanks
Hog

oh and one more thing anyone emailing me email to the hotmail addy I can check it on the web until I get my puter up again...

hog: you'll probably have to go to your registry, look for the little bugger(s) and delete it/them from the registry directly.

which registery Cav??

I can get into my folders... the only thing I cannot do is run start-up programs and this Icon has taken over the task bar and the rest of the system...

each time I run the Anti Virus it picks it up and deletes it but it is moving through files and changing its names...

with win98 I used to be able to boot up in DOS and go in find the file change its name and then delete it... but with this one I cannot get in DOS or boot up in safe mode.... XP is a different system then what I am familure with .. and this thing has me locked off the internet on that pc..

Thanks
Hog

shut the power down if you haven't already. i'm using guess work, but it can't hurt.

find a computer consultant that will come to the house for about $100.00 an hour. you need to have one of these know it guys that you can call occassionally.

my guru moved to another state, and until i found a new guy, i had a virus in one computer that i couldn't get rid of.

like any other service guy, the electrician, the washing machine repairman, etc, the only real way you will know if he is any good, is if the problem gets solved.

i suspect you are going to have to reinstall windows. anything less will be a bonus. you should have something like norton ghost back up or anything similar to back up to a cd in the future, so you are not f'd again.

if some one can develop a program, someone else can figure out how to vandalize it and your computer.

Norton Anti Virus
Hijack This
CW Shredder
Spybot Search and Destroy
spywareinfo.com (online spyware scanner)

Most importantly stop using Internet Explorer. Download Mozilla Firefox. It's almost identical to IExp, but it has none of the weaknesses found in IExp.

If you can get to folder, cut & paste the entire folder to floppies. When the floppy is full put in another and continue till all have saved. Do not "Copy" / paste.

After all have been saved you can deltree the DOS and reinstall. Go to YAHOO Communications and load the Bookmark program. If will copy all of your bookmarks to YAHOO and you can export back to your machine after it's fixed.

(Been where you now are - contact me at [email protected] if I can be of any help)

I also use SpywareBlaster 3.2...a great piece of freeware that blocks spyware from ever getting on to your PC...

Russ,

If your still having problems I'll send you my number and we'll work it over the phone. I've done so much tech support for my friends I should start my own business. Including wiping out viri.

You got a browser hijacker and/or probably one of the more recent worms that disables spyware/antivirus software.

Use the laptop and download the floppies from Norton that detect and repair the latests worms that are out there. Run them.

Then do as Cigarick said and make sure you have an antivirus program that is constantly updated, spyware killers/blockers that are constantly updated, and a good firewall like ZoneAlarm. And you can download Mozilla Firefox for free, which is as good (or better) browser than IE Explorer.

If all else fails, you probably will have to wipe your disk and do a clean install of XP. Make sure to go to Microsoft immediately afterwards and download the service packs. Then get all your anti-virus and spyblockers loaded and updated.

Good luck!

Good luck Russ.
I'm so computer iliterate when it comes to the system and programs, I'd hate to be in your shoes.
I can only imagine how this is driving you crazy and I feel for you, especially since it is taking away for the doghouse.

actually it wasn't a porn site..

AVB put up a post last week on Music.. although I knew the song I could not think of more lyrics to the song he posted...

Beware I did a Yahoo search "Lyrics" and the first results page I clicked on from there started to open at the same time I had like 5-6 more browsers open up and crap started downloading to the puter... although I had Norton System works.. Adaware and MSN pop-up blocker all working this crap still unloaded and installed a spyware/browser highjack/worm on the system... it has now taken over the start/menu programs and as I go through to scanning and moving files to the slave drive... I cannot even load the CD burner program to move files to a CD....

cannot get into DOS mode nor start up in Safe mode to do a proper search on the system like with Win 98SE I could go through dos and rename a worm/virus and delete it that way.. I have been blocked from my own system...

do not use Yahoo search on "Lyrics" LOL

I couldn't agree more. Their tech support is why I will never recommend their products. I use pccillian and have had no troubles since.
I also back up, most of my important stuff, on CDRW. It's a pain in the A$$, but it cuts down on a few of the headaches.

Hey Allan...

Well so far so good... and again thanks for your offer...

we backed everything up to the slave drive.. scanned it first and then reinstalled Win XP home version... but yesterday we installed the XP Pro over the top of that... everything is working tops right now.. some of the older programs would not work with the XP Pro.. so getting updates and all the good stuff just allot of time involved...
