Hey Bassdude I live in Mass (please no jokes) and I have started bass fishing. Small jon-boat, electric motor and a couple of rods. Yesterday I was out on my club pond bass fishing for a couple of hours and I caught and released well over a dozen bass. Most where small with a couple of two pounders. I know still small. I was using a top water Hedden Zara Super Spook a lot of action. I got two huge hits that got off. Here is the question. What can I use to catch the big ones. Rubber worm, spinner bait, pork jig. If it's a trade secret thats ok. I figure anything I can post on the misc. board that isn't political is cool. Thanks for any advice................

In the Springtime, look for shallow, gently sloping bottom, use a plastic Texas rigged worm, or salamander slowly drag it across the bottom. Momma bass won't leave her nest to eat, but will attack any intrusion on her nest (especially an egg eating salamander) motor oil has worked for me, but colors may vary from lake to lake. Good luck!

I told that joke to a game warden in Texas, and he gave me a withering look and said "Do you know how many times I've heard that joke?"

The 'normal' train of thought is bigger plug = bigger fish. That is not always the case on small ponds as the food source does not grow large. Many times small environment/pond = small bait. You need to mimic the food source. Bass feeding patterns change with the seasons.

The super spook is a very large plug, 5" and almost a lb. If it is catching small fish there are probably two reasons:
1. growth in the pond is stagnant due to lack of food and what you caught are the big ones.
2. it is an unnatural bait for the environment and the big fish are smart enough to realize it.

I love top water plugs but I rarely fish them. Nothing beats a lunker lure when the bass are feeding.

We consistently catch bigger fish on the following

jig&pig - try black and blue. another good one is the Eakins in brown.
spinner bait - not familiar with Mass we use either a 3/4 oz colorado or 1/2 to 3/4 oz tandem willow blade with chart/white skirts - modify blades and skirt depending on water clarity
plastics - tubes are my favorite, green pumpkin is my go to color, I also like lizards. Colors differ with season and water clarity.
crank baits - you can cover tons of water with these. a spring favorite is the rattle trap in shades of red.

The last 5 tournaments we fished someone in our family hit big bass. All were caught on jigs or spinnerbait.

Since they are hitting top water try a buzz bait and a pop r.

Oh course,YMMV but I've always had good luck with a Mepps Comet and a small length of pork rind. X

Thanks for the answer Bassdude. I failed to mention I did catch a 4-5 pounder on the Spook. I will try the jig and pig today and let you know. I was using a spinner bait yesterday with a yellow skirt and I caught bigger fish but not as many. I will also pick up some plastic tubes. Thanks for the advice......

To catch the bigger ones move south and use large live shinner minnows
I hear the world record is swimming in a lake (Zara?) in Cuba waiting to be caught
