Washington, DC--Republican National Committee Chairman Ed Gillespie issued the following statement on CBS’s admission today that memos regarding the President’s National Guard service are not real.

“We accept CBS's apology for a breach of the journalistic standards that provide the American people confidence in news organizations, but some disturbing questions remain unanswered.

“CBS has now answered questions about the authenticity of the documents but questions remain surrounding who created the documents, who provided them to CBS and if Senator Kerry's supporters, Party committee, or campaign played any role.

“Did Bill Burkett, Democrat activist and Kerry campaign supporter, who passed information to the DNC, work with Kerry campaign surrogate Max Cleland? Did Bill Burkett's talks with ‘senior’ Kerry campaign officials include discussions of the now discredited documents? Was the launch of the Democrat National Committee's Operation Fortunate Son designed with knowledge of the faked forged memos? Terry McAuliffe said yesterday that no one at the DNC or Kerry campaign, ‘had anything to do with the preparations of the documents,’ but what about the distribution or dissemination?

“In an effort to regain the trust of the American people CBS should not only investigate the process that led to the use of these documents but they should identify immediately those engaged in possible criminal activity who attempted to use a news organization to affect the outcome of a Presidential election in its closing days.”

Wow I cannot wait to hear how this one plays out LMAO!!!

Hog, do you REALLY think the moguls over at CBS will try to make it right? Like THL on another post, they'll use smoke and mirrors to imply that it's a Republican dirty trick, cleverly (how can an idiot that they claim Bush is be clever?) disguised as a Democratic dirty trick. And to be honest, I can see their point! Democrats usually use dead people to try to swing their elections, and the "vote early, vote often" concept. This would be breaking new ground for them!

NewsMax Poll: Dan Rather Must Resign
Millions of Americans are outraged by CBS News and Dan Rather for their obstinance in admitting they used forged documents to indict the military record of George W. Bush.

In an online survey completed this week, and with more than 100,000 respondents, NewsMax readers overwhelming believe that Dan Rather should resign as anchor for the CBS Evening News.

Mr. Rather's position may have been further weakened when:

a) it was revealed that CBS purposefully withheld from their
'60 Minutes' program forensic experts who said the documents were fraudulent;

b) after it was clear the documents were found to be fraudulent, Rather and Company continued to argue their story was essentially accurate; and

c) one witness, a fellow guardsman during Bush's time in service, was not allowed to appear on the CBS program because he was "too pro Bush."

But the NewsMax poll results show that the American people have not been fooled by CBS. The Tiffany Network's credibility may be completely lost -- unless Dan Rather accepts responsibility and resigns.

Here are the NewsMax Poll Results:

1) Do you believe CBS and Dan Rather used forged documents to make allegations about George Bush's National Guard service?

Yes - 98.27%
No - 1.73%

2) Do you agree with Dan Rather that his story questioning George Bush's service is still true?

Agree - 2.62%
Disagree - 97.38%

3) Should Dan Rather resign over the CBS story that used these questionable documents?

Yes - 94.05%
No - 5.95%

4) Who do you believe most about their account of their military record?

Bush - 87.74%
Kerry - 1.39%
Both - 4.35%
Neither - 6.52%

c'mon, hog. can you admit what everyone else seems to know? -- that newsmax is a decidedly CONSERVATIVE "news" outlet? lol

kerry's campaign denies any involvement. if we are asked to believe that bush has no involvement with the swift vets, we have to believe this, too. unless, of course, you automatically believe whatever bush says and automatically disbelieve anything kerry says.

Cavallo,

This has got to be asked. Burkett stated on a forum similar to this one that he had sought to give this evidence to Max Cleland, former democractic senator and a Kerry Supporter and Bush opposer. It is also factual (based on information from the CBS website) that it was CBS who sought out Bill Burkett and not the other way around. I would like to know who put CBS on to Bill Burkett. If it was Max Cleland or anyone from the Kerry campaign... stick a fork in 'em... they're done.

Sorry to post again so soon but I found this http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=694&u=/ap/20040921/ap_on_el_pr/cbs_guard_kerry_1&printer=1 article which indicates that Mapes referred Burkett to Joe Lockhart of the Kerry campaign. It also mentions that Burkett also spoke to Cleland. What a tangled web they weave. Interesting stuff, though no one admits conspiracy (who would??)

What is really interesting is that a supposedly unbiased journalist would refer her source to a strategist for the Democratic Party. I would say that Dan's job is safe for now but Ms. Mapes is toast.

Cheers,

grond, i think kerry's going to lose and it has nothing to do with CBS but everything to do with timing. folks don't change presidents mid-war, and i think bush can ride that alone all the way to a second term.

there is also a problem with voter turnout. i think from listening to a lot of people in a lot of varied venues that bush is not much liked by a good many people. thing is, those who complain most loudly about the man won't be bothered to go to the polls.

it's also problematic that kerry is just not a great alternative. even people who want to vote "anyone but bush" are not enamored of kerry in the slightest -- i count myself among them.

worst of all, though, it is PITIFUL the number of people who flat out think that it doesn't matter one bit whether they vote or not. so many people today think that it makes no difference, that they're "all the same," and therefor why even vote?

i'd honestly like to know what it would take for people to remember what a priviledge it is to vote and to get out there and do so. surely it hasn't always been this way -- has it? when did people stop giving a tinker's damn about voting?

Cav, I've got to agree with you there.. I've ran into many middle aged and older adults who have said they're fed up with the system and do not even care if they do vote... but there are many I've convinced into getting registered anyways... and not all these are for the one party... just convincing them to voice their opinion is one of the greatest reasons America is what it is today and we should not forget that...
