EW YORK (Reuters) - Surveillance powers granted to the FBI (news - web sites) under the Patriot Act, a cornerstone of the Bush Administration's war on terror, were ruled unconstitutional by a judge on Wednesday in a new blow to U.S. security policies.

U.S. District Judge Victor Marrero, in the first decision against a surveillance portion of the act, ruled for the American Civil Liberties Union (news - web sites) in its challenge against what it called "unchecked power" by the FBI to demand confidential customer records from communication companies, such as Internet service providers or telephone companies.

Rickamaven,

Ah, we agree. Our freedoms come at a cost, and I am for protecting those freedoms. That includes freedom from the Government and its actions at times, too.

Glad to hear that the courts are doing their job, protecting the constitution. Now, where are all the Neo-Cons??? Shouldn't they be here railing against those damn activist judges????

I've been called a neo-con on this board before, but nowhere will you ever find a post where I supported the Patriot Act! I'm glad the Judicary Branch has done it's part to ensure American freedoms, but I DO feel so strange coming down on the same side as the ACLU!

No Rick, I STILL think Bush is the lesser of the two available evils!
