and thank you for your service, ma'am...

FORTUNA, Calif. (AP) - Jean Ruth Hay, who woke millions of American troops each morning during World War II with her upbeat radio program "Reveille With Beverly," which was broadcast into foxholes, cockpits and military outposts from Alaska to New Zealand, died Sept. 18. She was 87.

Hay died after suffering a stroke while gardening, her son Bob said.

Between 1941 and 1944, Hay's dawn broadcast as the effervescent Beverly reached an estimated 11 million people. Her jumpin', jivin' selections - Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, Duke Ellington and Nat King Cole - were a welcome alternative to the 5:30 a.m. bugler's blast that jarred American troops from their beds in military outposts across the globe.

With a cold Coca-Cola in one hand and a stack of records in the other, Hay's day at Hollywood's station KNX-AM began with her signature opening, "Hi there, boys of the USA."

"We're ready with the stuff that makes you swing and sway," she would croon.

Called the world's first global disc jockey, her programs reached servicemen in 54 countries. Some saw her as the American counterbalance to the Pacific theater's "Tokyo Rose," who was actually an amalgam of several young women in Japan airing anti-American propaganda.

Hay posed for pinup shots and was voted by troops, "The girl we'd most like to be trapped in the turret of a B-17 with."

You'd call her a "neo-con" today!

I can honestly say i'd much rather wake up to the sound of a woman's voice than 4 bells and the Bosun's pipe. That shrill sound will make anyone roll out...

'Course I usually roll over and catch about 30 more minutes after that... unless I had a late watch... then I just stay in the rack until I ain't tired no more or it's time to eat. :-)

DMV: nope, i'd call her a patriot today or yesterday. patriots come in many forms. i'm still not sure what the hell a neo-con is supposed to be, and it doesn't much matter to me -- i tend to take people as individuals, not as pre-packaged labels. life's a lot more civil and humanity more tolerable that way. :)

Nice try at a quick and "snappy" retort. What all weekend fot THAT?

Too bad that on this very same board you denegrate the administration and chime in with reckless abandon, but yet go above board to support the troops. I couldn't live in that quandry. Trying to be everything to everyone, and then you trot out this fine American lady. A lady you wouldn't even recognize if you ran her over on the street. A lady that stood by her country and didn't play partisan politics because her convictions were with America and not a "party". It's funny how the left is attempting to soften up what with a few weeks before the election. Watching with their pieholes wide open at their man Lurch, bobbing and weaving and attempting to appear like he can zip up his own zipper when in fact we all know that his man John is on the spot so Lurch won't break a sweat with meaningless taks like that.

Keep up the support for the troops and whatever else you can do to not appear like the big flake you really are!

Hey DrM, save the vitriol for the commies and muslims.

I'm sure that Cavallo had more important things on his plate than a snappy retort to this thread.

Oh, and I know that the only quandary he's in, is how to get motivated enough to pull the "crank" on Kerry. However, when you think of the alternative, it get's easier. IMO, you can dislike the present administration and still love our troops.
