I LOVE CIGARS!!!!!!!!!!!!! That being said, cigars and liquor have one thing in common. Lately, they are both getting better by leaps and bounds. Tequila has become a sipping drink to be enjoyed straight up like 12 year old scotch and other fine drinks. Cigars are also becoming the best ever. CAO and other brands being sold in America are competing with the legendary CUBANS. Which is amazing to me. So I want to combine two of my favorite indulgences. This post is for everyone with an opinion on a great liquor to go with a great cigar. (I must applaud the Wild Turkety 104.8 proof RARE BREED, straight from the barrel burbon.) and (Jim Beam Black 8 year old burbon.) I am specifically looking for a recommendation for Islay Scotch, which is supposedly the best (and most expensive) in the world.

I like Laphroaigh (sp?). Its strong peaty aroma reminds me of the bicycle tube patch of my youth.

The Islay scotches come in a wide veriety from Bowmore to Laphroaig to Lagavulin to Ardbeg to the now defunct Port Ellen. There are also some decent blends and vatted Islays like Black Bottle or the new Peat Monster by Compass Box. If you really like the peat flavor the Peat Monster or the new 6yo Ardbeg are about as strong as you'll find. Sadly, neither is available in the US at the moment.

I'm a straight bourbon guy. No mixers, and if I have to, I'll mix with water. Beam, Knob Creek, cigar. Can't think of anything better together. 'Cept maybe with deep fried shrimp. Oh man...what time is it????

i stopped drinking tequila after a particularly bad encounter with some cheap cuervo something about 25 years ago. then at my favorite nightclub they introduce me to "Triada" made by Sauza (100% blue agave - whatever that is) at about $80 a bottle . . next thing i know i am doing shots of this stuff with some regularity . . until low and behold, just like the prior post . . they stop producing it . . what is up with that!!??

The over use of "blue agave" is just a trendy, catch phrase used for sales to the unknowing.
There is only one plant, and its dark or lite green.(also known as "maguay")

p.s. Most of america's youth ruins their taste for tequila w/bad quality/cuervo etc.

Thats o.k.
More of the good nectar for me.

Good times! in SoCAL.

How good is Sammy Hagar's Cabo Wabo tequila?

I don't want to spoil my palate with top of the line whiskey to accompany my every- day smokes. What are some alternatives to Maker's Mark?

Easy to please (Miller Draft drinker)

*Cabo wabo: Not @ the top of my list; but a good med. to good quality drink.

*A good alt to "Makers Mark" is "Wild Turkey" (101)you can find it for about $11.99-$18.99

p.s. shots are for rookies & tourist/tweens.

I'd have to go with Elijah Craig 12 year old Bourbon. Here in PA it is $16 for a 750ml bottle. Hell of a deal for a 12 yo.

If you don't like that then Wild Turkey Russell's Reserve
is pretty good at about $18 or if you are a Rye drinker, Pikesville Rye at only $9 here! Old Overholt while the butt of numerous jokes is a good Rye too at $14.

Being in a tough college science program, I really have to watch my intake of party treats. A couple of cigars at the end of the week really takes the nails out of my temples. From this low key perspective, I've found really heavy, complex, smooth red wines like Cabs, Merlots, & Zins can really get things happening with an equally heavy, complex, smooth cigar. I have to wonder though, don't those high octane drinks numb the palate a bit? I'll have to try it. Last time I was doing distlled spirits, a really high quality vodka, kept at about 32 degrees F, taken straight, was hard to beat for pure smoothness. I may pick up a bottle next week and do some with a stogie, or even a high nicotine content stogie (J de N Celebracions are turbocharged). Should be a RUUUUUSH!!

Primate, what have I told you about caffeine?

Guys, thank for the tips on the Elijah Craig Bourbon, & Wild Turkey (Reserve). I'm not much of a rye drinker.

However, I'm interested in your thoughts about other good, mid-range ($$$) spirits.

Any alternatives to the following that I enjoy while I watch Redskin turnovers?

1. Bacardi Select (not Gold) Rum
2. Stoli and Skyy Vodkas
3. Hennessy (VSOP) and Salignac Cognacs
4. Domino de Villasanta Amontillado Sherry
5. CVS Rubbing Alcohol

Being predominately a scotch man I prefer either The Dalmore Cigar Malt or The Glenlivet 12 Year Old However I will also entertain Mr. Daniels when ever he comes around. Sometimes I call him Jack and other times I might refer to him as Gentleman Jack. When I'm feeling mellow and just want to chill I might call upon the kindness of the green faerie and imbibe Verte Suisse 65. And when all else fails nothing beats a Miller light.

Has anyone ever heard of a tequila called Reserva Del Dueno? Or the hybrid of that called Jerezito, only availible for a very limited period, aged in Port barrels.

Cabo Wabo?

Gimmie a break! I won't put a slim dime in Spammy's hands (RNC backer or not!).

I've tried it and it's not all that. Kinda like his singing! Nice bottle though. Stick with 1800 or Monte Alban Mezcal!

Me? I'll stick to my rum. I'm not too picky. A nice cigar and a glass of rum that's all I need. A nice cigar, a glass of rum and Selma sitting on my lap that's all I need. All I need is a cigar, a glass of rum, Selma sitting on my lap and this remote that's all I need...

for a mixed drink, i like capt morgan and coke. for straight drinks, i like dimple pinch. yeah, i know it's a scotch blend and a fairly cheap one at that, but it's pretty smooth. a buddy of mine really likes oban, but that stuff is too expensive for me. it's also not quite as mild to me.

usually, i just drink beer. right about now sam adams has their octoberfest beer available. that's good stuff with a cigar.

Sounds good Lofty!
Almost bought some Capt. Morgan today but there's something about "spice" in rum that makes me a little queasy. LOL

where do you guys get the money to buy these liquors?

I live in Oregon where the liquor taxes are rediculous, and the only time I can afford 100% agave tequilla is when I pick sone up on the return trip from Mexico (I can buy bottles there for $15, that go for $55 in the liquor stores here).

Maybe the problem is the volume of my consumption. :-(

^ I know what you mean, Moreno.

Sometimes I see the image of a bunch of barrel-wearing botls sipping imported scotch and puffing ten dollar cigars. LOL

Look on the bright side Moreno, with the Oregon health plan, they may not grant you a transplant when your liver goes sclerotic, but you'll get a nice little bottle of cherry flavored phenobarbitol for your trouble.

My personal favorites are:

Scotch - Highland Park 18 y/o (a little expensive, but is one of the smoothest, most flavorful scotches I have ever tried. This also is a perfect compliment to almost any cigar imaginable)

Gin - Bombay Sapphire (perfect in a martini)

Vodka - Chopin (smooth with a touch of sweetness - keep in the freezer)

Bourbon - Old Rip van Winkle 15 y/o (for about $30.00 in PA, this is the best bourbon money can buy IMHO. Also with a splash of water (comes bottled at 105 proof)it is a perfect match with any Padron cigar).

To answer your question Bloody Spainard...

Rum...Mazatlan, Brugal, Appleton Reserve, Mount Gay, Malibu Lime, Malibu Coconut, but Sangster's Old Jamaica Coconut rum is THE stuff(stiff) of legends!

Vodka...Skyy, Bombay, Grey Goose, Finlandia(not exactly mid priced BUT if you're gonna drink...make it count eh?)
