I see that the Seattle (often referred to as the "rainy city") Mariners, have hired Mike Hargrove (often referred to as "the human rain delay" as their new manager ...
Now, there IS a lot of poetry in that choice, but honestly ... Mike didn't exactly light the world on fire with success in either Cleveland or Baltimore ... is retreading him for a 3rd time REALLY the best they could do?

Makes you wonder, seems like once a Manager, coach, etc always a job available for you! Mike used to take so long preparing to hit, that the pitcher would sometimes fall asleep, thus the "Human Rain Delay" nickname!

This should be interesting to see what happens to the Mariners!

He did OK in Cleveland, but he had a load of talent. He did squat in Baltimore because he didnt have any talent. Now hes in Seattle which is about the same if not worse than the Orioles. They would have been better off dumping all the old fart players and hiring a younger first time guy.

As an Orioles fan I was glad to see him go. Beat speaks the truth, though. He was consistently given bad pitching.

You guys have it pegged ... I really liked Mike as a player, but don't see him as an inspired choice as a coach or manager ... yeah, he DID do OK (but no more) in Cleveland where he had a talented squad, but hell, I think that I could manage a major league team with loads of talent ...

The Mariners are a team with SOME talent and a lot of journeymen ... a big upside exists for a guy with real insight and skill for growing a winner ... I just don't think he's the guy ...

Charlie's right ... it's an old-boy network and once you're in, you just get recycled ... and just because a guy was a good player, he won't necessarily be a good coach ... Joe Dimaggio was as good as they get as a player, but couldn't coach for sh** ...

I'm thinking if I were the owner/GM in Seattle, I'd be looking for a more inspired choice ... say a guy like Willie Randolph or ???

Living in Washington state is like living in perpetual "we'll get them next year." Lou Pinnella was a god send to the M's and the team he put together just couldn't quite make a go of it with a bad manager.

Now Mike Hargrove... the only thing that we can do is wait to see what he can do. I think the M's have a decent farm system with some great pitching and a lot of guys got to see time in the bigs this last season. We are always hopeful.

Hey, that brings up a question ... have you ever considered that baseball managers are the ONLY coaches who dress as the players do?? ... imagine Pat Riley wearing a Lakers uniform instead of an Armani suit ... and I'd pay to see Gruden dressed in a Bucs uni ...

So, why is it that baseball managers and coaches dress in team uniforms while the coaches in NO other sport do so ??

SteveS..

I have ponderd this myself. I believe it is because a baseball coach/manager is the only one allowed to actually go onto the field of play during live play, basecoaches, or during a stoppage ie: talk to a picther argue a call etc etc. The other sports the coaches are supposed to stay off the field at all times.

There have also been player/managers in baseball as well.

The Mariner's problems the past couple of years IMHO had far more to do with decisions the front office made, or more appropriately did not make, than it did with the field manager. Frankly, unless something changes in the off-season Hargrove does not have much to work with.

He's the only one I can think of that ever did so and because the rules have been changed since his time, he couldn't do that these days.

A very accurate assessment, IMNSHO, sir ... BoMel could've done more if he'd had more ... and giving him the heave-ho in favor of re-treading Hargrove accomplishes nothing more than to create a scape-goat ...
