I gotta say it. Who is GWB to tell the Israelis they must withdraw without delay? Why should Sharon listen to him or Colin Powell? I reckon he will do what he thinks is best for his country. And GW says he will send peacekeepers? I can't see how he is going to talk his way out of this one!

First they will be called " monitors " not " peacekeepers " a big difference. As the United States supports Israel financially, GWB has every right to make suggestions however all Sharon has to point out is he is fighting the war on terrorism a war GWB himself has declared.

Due to the recent plight involving suicide bombers this is indeed terrorism. But this war goes MUCH deeper than the recent rise in activity. And GWB, as Commander in Chief of the Worlds only Superpower has EVERY right to demand anything he wants. ESPECIALLY when it concerns Isreal, since we have been their big brother for years. Yes, it has been a mutually beneficial relationship (as all should be), but Bush wants Powell to go there to help and an immediate withdrawal is necessary for his safety. You can't be so blind as to not see that, can you?

More importantly, why would he say it? I remember a phrase by a much more popular president that said: "speak softly but carry a big stick". We now are demonstrating the opposite. Speak loudly and carry a small stick. He has really stuck his neck out. If Isreal does not pull out, what will Geedubya do next? Attempt to intervene in a war that is largely ignored by the american people and that they by and large have no interest in? A war that is unpopular with the people who are paying attention? Lets face it, most people in the U.S. are interested in fighting popular wars. These are wars that are against "evil" people who mean to harm U.S. citizens. In other words, wars to protect U.S. interests, mainly fossil fuels. Isreal is a place of little interest for a large portion of our population, whether thats right or wrong makes very little difference. When the first U.S. soldiers start coming home from peacekeeping duties in body bags, I can gaurantee you that three years wont be long enough to turn it around and win the next election.

I'm not sure who this "more popular president" is, but I believe that it was a Brittish Prime minister who said it first. I could be wrong. cj

... wouldn't it be nice if Israel was a major oil exporter ... then again - why is it that Kuwait has yet to make a statement in response to the Iraqi declaration of halting oil exports for a month ... maybe Kuwait should up the exports to compensate the loss overall to help us maintain the stability of our economy ... then again, now that Enron is out of the picture I suppose there are those in the select group that need to pursue other avenues of income .... all in all - it's pretty sad in my opinion that we have people in this world that have to decide between Porsche and Ferrari and those that have to decide between food or medicine .... may God help us all and have sympathy for those that don't have a choice or a chance in todays political theatre of events ....

I understand that because we foot some bills for Israel we can make requests of them with a reasonable expectation they will be honored. But I think that when demands are made of Israel or orders given, they might do just the opposite. I understand the situation is dire for the Palestinians. I just think the response was handled badly. Colin Powell isn't using the word "We". He is refers to what the President wants. Maybe GWB should listen to his S of S. What would we do if American Indians started a suicide bombing campaign?

Bush's comment was regarding the fact that Powell IS going over there. And Isreal has already pulled out of three areas. Why would his request, however worded, offend anyone in the US? Why should he ****-foot around the issue here? America is coming in to once again play peace-keeper. It probably won't work, but it can't hurt to try. What's the worst thing that can happen? One week of cease fire. And that's a good start...

Israel can clean up it's own mess! Another bus bombed today. Over 200 Palestinians killed so far. If we send our boys over body bags will come back for sure. What is to be gained for us? For the Israelis? The Palestinians gain whenever they aren't being shot at. They won't stop until they have EVERYTHING they want. Who's going to give it to them? Us? The Israelis never will. What will we do? Make it the 51st state? Then we can fight everybody all at once!

Bush's comment didn't offend me. I thought it was a naive, ignorant and arrogant thing to say. Unless he was trying to impress the arab nations with his authority over Israel. OOPS! That didn't work.

Isreal and Palestine will be fighting for another 300 years and since the USA supports Isreal the way we do, I would think that GWB should have some say in what they are doing by escalating this war! I do not know what I would do if I were in Sharon's shoes and he is a hawk in the first degree and will probably pull back reluctantly if only for a brief period! They will never quit fighting and this thing will only escalate to a higher and more deadly cost before it is all over! I hope we do not send American Troops into the middle of this mess as we have enough messes to worry about without worrying about some idiot with bombs stapped to his/her waist! The nutshell view: ISREAL SHOULD WIPE OUT PALESTINE, MEN, WOMEN AND CHILDREN!!!!

repeat after me...P-O-S-T-U-R-I-N-G. Say what must be said to appease the Arabs, Israel knows where the U.S. stands on this issue.

A local radio jock who is Libertarian and only likes Bush when it is good fodder for his program put this interesting perspective on the Powell visit: The US or the UN needs to invite both Sharon and Arrafat to the table. But they must do so with an agreed upon cease fire. We know Sharon has the power to pull his troops back. But should the suicide bombers continue, one of two scenarios must be true: 1. Arrafat is not in control of his people or 2. He is in control and chooses not to stop the bombing. Either way, Arrafat loses what little credibility he had and he is no longer the guy to speak to concerning peace. Too simple? Perhaps, but so was punching a ballot until 18 months ago...
