In philadelphia we have a african american mayor, fire commissioner, head of city council, and now police commissioner. Last night while addressing the naacp our illustious mayor said: "brothers and sisters we now run the city of philadelphia",not to much was made of his statement. If a caucasian mayor had made a statement of the same nature the naacp would have reverends al shrimpton and jessie (the fornicator) jackson down here yelling for impeachment. JonR

Are there any so ignorant as to believe only those of European descent can be stupid or bigoted? Unfortunately, the answer is yes. The name Jesse comes to mind.

It is too bad that the ignorant devil was elected to begin with, and how he is showing his "true color" so to speak! Charlie

arrogant-ignorant **** they may be, but char5353's use of "true color" in it's context is tacky, racist, and contemptible.

char just stating the facts. I used to live in the philly area and as far as I'm concerned the city hasn't been the same since Rizzo left office.

He's a racist and a disgrace to the city of Philadelphia, IMHO. It's amazing people are so blind not to see the damage he is doing to both the city and the feeding of racism.

Rick, I am not a racist, but in this case "if the damn shoe fits, wear it" and I will wear it! I am sick and tired of African/Americans or any other fill in the blank/Americans trying to take advantage America and hide behind the race card! It is fine for the Al Sharptons and Jesse Jackson's of the world to throw race into something, but not for others to do so!!! NOT!!! Rick, quit being so damn politically correct and open your eyes!

CONTEMPTIBLE??? Have to remember that one! Chuckle, chuckle!!! Like Johnny Cochran doesn't play race in each and every trial he undertakes!!! The OJ Simpson defense was contemptible, but politically correct!! Charlie

I understand that since this Mayor has been in office Philly is no longer the fattest city in the nation. He personally takes credit for this. Good to see he has his priorities straight(sarcasm)! A side note: I have said many times that if I lived in Philly, I would have a cheesesteak every week. And I would savor each and every one!

Ricky, you can't be so blinded by PC Liberalism as to call Charlie a racist for that remark, can you? The term "true color" has a definate meaning unrelated to human race. Charlie used it correctly, but since this is typed and not spoken, he realized the irony of the words themselves. And he purposely left the phrase intact. Racist? Lighten up!

tailgater : it was and is racist. as far as cochran and jackson and sharpton are concerned, they are petty little men that use race at the drop of a feather. none of these people have any credibility. i doubt that anyone in the black community really take any of them seriously, except for the some that are looking for a free ride. the point i am making is the use of some phrases, while not meant to be racist, are. by we, he means blacks. of course that mayor is a racist.
what do we gain by stooping to his level and using a cliche like "true color" which means what else can you expect from a ****.

Rick: Too bad you don't understand irony. It's actually quite a useful and pleasant linguistic tool when properly utilized. Charlies comment reeked not of racism, but of irony. When you cry wolf, it only lessens the effect of important words such as "racism" by desensitizing the listeners.

Rick, what if the mayor in question was evil and I commented that he had a "dark side". Would that be racist? Will this questionable quote give him a "black eye" in the next election? Or did the media "give him enough rope"? What could you have possibly done in this life to feel so guilty that you are afraid to use common phrases?

tailgater: "dark side" not racist, more biblical, or star wars. "you are afraid to use common phrases?" i believe my recent post suggests other wise. incidently that was the name of the book written by ****** gregory who said "mom, every time you hear that word, they are promoting my book."

In the 60's I watched Lenny Bruce disintegrating on stage reading transcripts of his trials, apparently dressed only in an overcoat and needing a shave. He would sometimes repeat the n word over and over and over, trying to make it lose its meaning. I think black people among themselves have largely accomplished that, in fact have turned it into a term of endearment or comeraderie, but it is an exclusive club and the rest of the world so far is barred from membership. All this will pass. The sooner the better.

"It" will never die or pass as long as the African/American (I hope this doesn't offend you Rick) community keeps pulling the "race card" when it benefits them (only word I could use-them)! Charlie

Apparantly, the distinction between "racial" and "racist" is too subtle to be distinguished here.

I was a Mort Sahl fan, too. But, like Lenny with his obscenity trials, Mort got so angry after the JFK assasination, and so fixated, that he stopped being funny for 20 years. A great loss, because he was the best of all of them.

Brother Dave Gardner mostly played the southern circuits. Very funny, very pre-PC. He was white, and I think the civil rights movement killed his act. Had a couple albums, don't know if they hold up today. Parts of them will. Flip Wilson safely did some of his stuff, like "You gon' be here when John gets here?" Died a few years ago. Gotta be somethin on the net about him, everythings out there.

flip was a classs act. when his show ended, he spent the rest of the time traveling the world with his kids. i think one of them was dying and he devoted the rest of the childs life to him.

Brother Dave Gardner sounded a lot like an old timey Southern Baptist Minister and he sang and told jokes!! Very, very politically incorrect! Played Southern Clubs and Vegas!!! Flip Wilson used a lot of Brother Daves lines! Gardner wore white suits smoked one cigarette after another and was very funny and the most politically incorrect act of the 50's and 60's. He had a couple of albums go gold and appeared on late night TV shows in the 60's! Civil rights movement did him in along with lung cancer! Charrlie
