Anyone have any practical advice for the best (most affordable) way to send parcel post to the middle east? or which carrier to use?

As many times as I was deployed, my wife always used the USPS and it always got there. DHL is supposed to be the fastest, but without knowing if you are sending it to a permanent address or a deployed unit, your question is hard to answer. FPOs and APOs are best serviced by using USPS Priority mail. Fedex and DHL would be a good place to research to see if they service them. But, be prepared to pay. $$$

You will have to fill out a customs declaration form in person wherever you send the package from. And, it will more than likely be opened & inspected once it gets to the FPO. From there it will be airlifted to the closest base then to the battle group carrier or amphibious group command ship then to it's destination if applicable. Expect 2-3 weeks delivery. USPS Priority is your best bet. Hope I could help.

I'm sure the guys and gals at Operation From the Heart can tell you just about anything you need to know regarding shipping boxes to the troops.

CP, use USPS because it is the cheapest... if your shipping packages to a soldier it heads to either the east coast or west coast and get put in the APO/FPO military mail system... the only guarentee is from USPS or any other carrier to the APO/FPO military mail... anything further then that is in the hands of the military carriers... you can still insure the package, but there really isn't a need... you can do a customs claim form for what is in the package and the value amount IE: Books, Magazines = Cigars... outgoing mail from the States is faster then the incoming mail... don't know why that is??

Hope this info helps...
