Detroit Public Schools: 40,000 kids to get laptops from stimulus funds

By CHASTITY PRATT DAWSEY

Detroit Public Schools will spend $49 million in federal money to push technology in the district, including distributing 40,000 new laptop computers to students in grades 6-12 for use in class, as well as more than 5,000 new desktop computers.

Each DPS teacher also will get a laptop.

The computers are being funded by stimulus money under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. Details are to be announced this morning by DPS emergency financial manager Robert Bobb.

The district already has started distributing the computers and expects to deliver them all by the end of this school year, said Kisha Verdusco, a DPS spokeswoman.

The massive technology infusion totals 50,000 pieces of equipment -- including 4,300 printer/scanners and more than 500 HP desktop computers for the 138 early childhood classrooms in the district.

The announcement about the infusion of new computers will be made at 9 a.m. at Davis Aerospace High School, 10200 Erwin St. School personnel also will demonstrate anti-theft features that will be used to safeguard and track the computers.

You watch, 39,000 laptop computers will suddenly flood the Detroit pawn shops...

And 40,000 little disadvantaged sociopaths will shortly thereafter demonstrate the futility of this feel-good social engineering experiment.

A total of 50,000 pieces at 49 mil, equates to just under $1,000 each! Typical government overspending. Doesn't Wal-Mart, Best Buy, etc. sell laptops for $300 to $400? You would think that 50,000 pieces could be bought direct from the manufacturer for a couple hundred bucks each. Government officials are ALL a bunch of brain dead village idiots. These are the people Ricky Poo and other liberals here want running our lives.

DPS says teacher tried to pawn school laptop

By NAOMI R. PATTON

Detroit Public Schools officials say they have suspended a Durfee Elementary School teacher who allegedly tried to pawn her district-owned laptop computer at one of the biggest, most popular pawnshops in Detroit.

The DPS Office of the Inspector General investigation said Karen Drysdale-Oriucci, a DPS teacher since 1994, went to American Jewelry and Loan on Greenfield Road on Wednesday to pawn the netbook computer she received from the district on Dec. 17.

Store staff refused to pay the teacher for the netbook –- which is engraved with the DPS “I’m In” logo on its cover -– instead confiscating it and contacting DPS officials.

Drysdale-Oriucci was suspended Thursday with pay, pending a disciplinary hearing.

DPS Emergency Financial Manager Robert Bobb commended the owners of American Jewelry and Loan for refusing the sale and reporting the teacher to authorities

Unless the government wants to fund housing on school campuses, it makes good economic sense...I imagine busses are cheaper. Dancing

As I like to point out, with a slide rule we were able to send men to the moon.

With quad-core, 3 GHz technology we're able to send people to...uh...Narnia.

Technology does not propel people to great heights, nor drives people to do great things - desire does.

Seriously Robert, you like so many in this country are fascinated with shiny bobbles and catchy buzz-phrases. You make the assumption that fancy gizmos automatically make things better. They don't.

Actually, that's most likely correct.

The laptops will probably clock-in at around $400.00 per unit, because they'll be buying in bulk. It'll probably be about $100.00 per unit for the OS rollout. The rest will be siphoned off by the bureaucracy.

I might remind everyone here that Detroit has a bad habit of paying for teachers and administrators who are no longer employed by the Detroit School District...but they have a hard time keeping toilet paper in stock for the bathrooms in the schools.
