OK, I recently installed SP2 hoping it would help stop these friggin pop-ups. Is Netscape as bad as IE?

I am running McAfee, Lavasoft Adaware and Spydoctor2

Anyone who can help this particular one and the poker ads are driving me insane.

I can not figure out what is spawning this

I use spy sweeper. It gets far more spyware than the one you listed...

As far as popups go, I use the google toolbar. Seems to work pretty well for me...

Is the one you are running freeware?

I am almost pissed enough to convert to Linux.

And when I get my new computer at home, I'm messing around with Linux...I know it's not immune, but I bet a lot of malignant stuff out there is targeting Microsoft products just to give the company hell.

I'm responsible for 5300 computer in my employers network (5200 PCs and 100 Macs.) We use Firefox and IE w/Google Toolbar. Are also running Spy Sweeper and Ad-Aware with much success.

Linux is the way to go. If you're looking, you might consider Suse or maybe even get a Mac.

Best of luck,

We have 3 different firewalls for pop ups. Granted they are reduced but these programmers are shrewd and manage to stay a step ahead of the anti-pop-up software.

I use Mozilla Firefox browser someone recommended it to me awhile back... I also use IE and with having both browsers loaded on the puter the firefox spyware blocker works for the IE also... just keep the MFF as your main browser and you can use IE for surfing etc... the pop-ups have been blocked almost 100%

I also run No Adaware and spyware blaster.... this has help our puter considerably.. since the crash a few months back we haven't had any problems after adding these preventatives.... and their all freeware...

BTW Norton Antivirus and Firewall 2004 suck.. and have caused many crashes including mine on the main computer and then the laptop went tits up!!!! I squabled with Systematic about a refund on their 2004 program and ended up eating 80 bucks worth of their cr@p... we found Panda antivirus and firewall and never looked back... it finds cr@p in emails etc and blocks out bad websites... they were running a 1 yr free product testing awhile back... not sure now.. but still better the Norton/Systematic/(systemcrapic)

BASSDUDE,you are being hijacked. Do a google search for "Hijack This." Download it and follow the instructions. Also, you may want to do a google on the url that you're being re-directed to, chances are someone has posted a fix for your particular hijack scenario. Blocking the actual pop-up is just a band-aid.

I haven't had much of a pop-up problem since installing the zonealarm firewall. Free version.

Been using Google popup blocker and Spybot Search and Destroy and all three computers at home. Haven't had problems yet, then again, I've not installed SP2 for XP.

what's a pop up?

Mozilla, spybot, spyware blaster, Norton AV seem to keep most of the crap off my PC

It sounds like you've gotten the dreaded "69.20.16.183 ieautosearch" look2me variant that is a real bitch to remove. It made it's way into the wild around November 28'th and so-far none of the removers have been working on it yet. I worked on it for about 9 hours yesterday with no luck. Ad-aware released a new update today so I'm hoping that may take care of it. If not the only way right now is to format and start over. But I would wait for a few more days to see if spybot or adaware comes out with something.

If you run hijack this and you see something like this
O1 - Hosts: 69.20.16.183 search.netscape.com
O1 - Hosts: 69.20.16.183 ieautosearch
O1 - Hosts: 69.20.16.183 ieautosearch
O1 - Hosts: 69.20.16.183 ieautosearch
O1 - Hosts: 69.20.16.183 auto.search.msn.com

Then you have it and your pissing in the wind trying to get rid of it. Because every time you clean your host file this damn thing will put it back and will not let you read only protect your host file. It has so many hooks in the registry and dozens of files all over your hard drive that it's prove to be impossible to find them all.

If this is what you have then shoot me an e-mail and I'll give you a hand removing it once I get if off the
other computer I'm working on.

There's an ".exe" that's been loaded that respawns all of those registry settings and files that you refer to, Cliff. You MUST find that .exe or all of your other work is wasted. Usually "Hijack This" will give you the file path to the little **** even if it can't delete it. Remove what you can in windows then boot to DOS. Once in DOS you'll be able to remove the stuff that you couldn't remove with Windows. In DOS mode your permissions for filesets hasn't been loaded yet, so you have to do it in DOS.

Adware and Spybot should do the trick. And both are free!
