SPRINGFIELD -- The names of people authorized to own guns in Illinois is public information that the state must disclose, according to a ruling from the office of Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan.

The Illinois State Police determines who gets Firearm Owners Identification cards but has always kept the information confidential.

Madigan's public access counselor issued a letter Monday night rejecting state police arguments that releasing the information is an unwarranted invasion of privacy prohibited by the state public-records law or that its disclosure would automatically endanger the lives of gun owners or those who don't have firearms.

Despite the decree, the names likely won't be uncloaked soon. A state police lawyer indicated earlier the agency planned to take to court a contrary ruling from Madigan's office. And Republican lawmakers have filed legislation to make names permanently private.

Same sh*t here in Oregon but with concealed carry license holders.....they can't outlaw guns so use Sal Alinski's rules for radicals and find something or someone to marginalize.

It's only fair then that they also publicize a list of people who don't own guns.

All this and Obama has nominated super anti-gun BATFE Chicago district chief Andrew Traver to head-up the BATFE in toto. And once again, the senate will give this admin a pass and appoint him.Gonz

It is a constitutional right. Bad policy unless gun owners were advised of risk of public records disclosure. Stop-gap law will likely be deemed ex-post facto.

I think a tastefully done 'GUN FREE HOME' sign in the front yard might bring 'em in quite nicely.

Just got some old stuff my dearly departed great grandma had.
One card is a target with the words "gun free home" on it with anti connie stuff on the back. The other business card is for Joeseph Stalin...funny sh*t...should get that out tonight and post it.

So, in order to legally own a gun in Illinois, do you have to have one of the Identification Cards? Living out in the free wild west, I often forget that there are such crazy laws out there.

Firearms Owners ID card = FOID card. Everyone in illinois that has or wants to buy a gun needs to get a card first. Just a way for the state to keep track of who has a firearm.

The fact that this will also expose those who DO NOT have a FOID card is helping to generate support for the legislation to keep the list private. Also hope this generates more support for concealed carry bills currently in both the house and senate. The Atty Genl is the daughter of Michael Madigan, the Speaker of the IL House of Rep. (arguably the most powerful politician in the state). He is, of course from Chicago, and has successfully blocked gun legislation favored by downstate for years. Welcome to the dirty game of Il politics.......Brick wall Brick wall Brick wall
