Some time before smoking my first PAN exclusivo I visited CA's rating area to find out what others had to say --"herbs,spice,nutmeg,chocolate,floral,white chocolate, red wine, macadamia, labluub juice(!),cedar, cocoa, molasses, cherrywood, caramel, buttery, leathery, cinnamon, coffe, seeet, berries, espresso, black pepper, ripe berries, deep mocha,..."-- and I thought, with slight overtones of cynacism and a hint of skepticsm, these guys must be joking. Are they smoking it or eating it? Are they blessed/afflicted with hyper-sensitve sensors that I don't possess, simply full of ****, or perhaps a little of both?

Well, I smoked it while on the interstate one recent cold and snowy night. I immediately thought, wow this is one of my best ever. I lost myself in other thoughts when, in a very slight/subtle manner, I sensed blackcherries (of all things). Well, I just had an epiphany. Alone. In the middle of nowhere. My perspective was adjusted -- I no longer read reviews the same way. Reviewers will continue to attempt describing a good complex smoke in more ways than they perhaps should. Me, I'll keep the blackcherry reference to myself, and when asked to describe my favorite cigar I will borrow from Travolta to Thurman in Pulp Fiction when asked about the milkshake, and say "Thats one f**king good cigar".

I'm rambling. Slow day at work here. Anyone know what labluub juice is? With my luck is a sexual thang and I will be exiled.

I've thoroughly enjoyed the few PAN's and PAM's I've had, but I never detected any labluub juice. I think that's French for "lube juice". I actually don't know what lube juice tastes like. I guess there's not enough excitement in my life.

Not to sound like some sort of 'snob' but, ... professional wine tasters have been doing this since the beginning of time.

I use to work in a 'food laboratory' (the headquarters is on 'the hill' in Washingtion D.C.), and there is actually a 'Sensory Department' that specializes in dectecting the 'notes' in various foods that companies want to begin to produce. To become a trained 'sensory analyst' takes quite a bit of extensive training, and is not taken lightly.

Many people must train their palates to recognize the different tastes, and yes, if someone says that something tastes like leather ... they have samples of leather for comparison for those who don't recognize it, and so on ...

The big joke when I worked there ... was to say something tasted like 'sh*t' ...

But, all joking aside ... these tasters are well trained and once proficient at it, are highly regarded as experts in their field, and paid extremely well!

Now I'm not saying that the average 'Joe Blow' can detect all these subtle notes in a cigar ... but there are those who can ... and I personally can dectect many different flavors in many cigars. Others ... I can't.

BTW ... what they were probably talking about was:

Lablab bean
Lablab purpureus, Dolichos lablab

Called by many names including hyacinth, Egyptian, bonavista, tonka or wall beans, these are eaten both as a fresh and dried bean. There are a number of varieties, varying somewhat in shape and size. Some are used only for their peas while others, with thicker pods, are used as a green vegetable in curries. The pods of the fresh beans may be green or purple in colour. The best known are papri or popetti (large pea-shaped pods, grown for their attractive dried, brown peas with a white stripe); siem, a flattish pea with a fleshier pod like a pea-length version of the flat, undulating ribbon-shaped continental green beans; and val (valour) which looks more like a green runner bean, bulging with overdeveloped seeds. The last two are eaten fresh, topped and tailed then cut up and added to curries and vegetable dishes.

slim - you're some kinda BB stud. I've surfed through the last few weeks' posts and you definitely get my vote for the (annual, monthly, weekly, daily, hourly -- say how often are these things given?) cliff claven. There are close seconds though. I enjoy your input, keep on truckin.

....The more ya toot, the better ya feel, so eat beans every meal! Talk about sensory perception! Although my wife isn't exactly excited about it, my kids and I sing this song often. A classic ditty.
