I was wondering what the oscuro brings to the cigar. I have been smoking the Tamayo Ye Pereto dark maduro's and really like them. I was wondering if anyone has had the Victor Sinclair Oscuro cigars, and if they could shed some light on the situation. Thanx for the help.

I always figured "oscuro" just meant it was the darkest of the dark maduros. I love maduros, so if it says "oscuro", I'm in. BTW, I picked up some Puros Indios oscuros that look maybe EMS. They ARE tasty, though. Ya never know!

If you want to try a great oscoro, get some El Rey Del Mundo's . I think they only come in two sizes, both 52 ring. One of my favorites.

Oscuro is 'triple-fermented' leaves that are a step up from the double maduro (maybe that's only a second fermentation) ...

La Perla 'Black Pearl' uses and oscuro wrapper, Punch offers Oscuro in the 'After Dinner', Pita, Elites, Chateau L, Rothschild and the Corona, just to name a few ...

The darker the cigar, the sweeter and stonger the flavor is likely to be, in addition, the wrapper will have a greater oil and sugar content. Darker wrappers have spent longer time on the tobacco plant or have come from higher altitudes, extra exposure to sunlight produces both oil and sugar. They will also have been fermented longer.

Maduros are very dark brown in color (like black coffee) and are the color for seasoned smokers. They are also thought of as the traditional Cuban color. Oscuro cigars are black, very stong with little bouquet and (according to one source) are very rare.

Speaking of cigar wrapper colors ... here's a 'cut-n-paste' I thought the newer folk might enjoy:

COLORS

Cigar wrappers come in a palette of colors that resemble human skin tones. Just as scientists describe the rainbow in seven basic colors, aficionados use seven basic color descriptions for wrappers, although there are many subtle shades in between these basic colors, and some cigar merchants describe cigars in many more hues. the easiest way to get a handle on this color scale is to remember that, just as the state of Colorado is in the middle of the United States, (more or less), the color "colorado" is in the middle of the range of wrapper colors.

The variation in wrapper color is a function of how the wrapper leaf is processed, as well as the color variation of different types of tobacco, and the amount of sunlight a leaf is exposed to (which in turn depends on how high up on the plant the leaf was located).

From light to dark, the seven commonly used wrapper color descriptions are:

Double Claro, also called Candela

A light green to yellow shade achieved by a heat-assisted quick-drying process that retains the chlorophyll content of the wrapper leaves. At one time. American showed a preference for those slightly sweet-tasting wrappers, and Europeans looked down on them for it. Since then, both American and European tastes have broadened.

Claro

A light tan color, usually achieved by growing under shade tents, by picking the leaves before they mature, and by quickly air-drying them. Claro wrappers are relatively neutral in flavor and let the flavors of the "bunch"--the tobacco inside the cigar--shine through.

Colorado Claro

Light brown; most often sun-grown.

Colorado

A medium-brown to brownish-red shade of wrapper leaf. Usually shade-grown and characterized by rich flavor and subtle aroma.

Colorado Maduro

Darker than colorado, lighter than maduro.

Maduro

A shade of wrapper varying from a very dark reddish-brown to almost black. The word means "ripe" in Spanish; a reference to the longer process needed to produce this kind of wrapper: the leaves are either "cooked" in a pressure chamber, or fermented for a longer period of time in hotter-than-normal conditions. Maduro wrappers impart distinct character to a cigar: they taste as different as they look. They generally have a mild aroma, but a strong, slightly sweet flavor.

Oscuro

This darker-than-maduro shade is produced by leaving the wrapper leaf on the plant the longest, by using only the leaves from the very top of the tobacco plant, which have had the most sun, and by fermenting, or "sweating", them the longest. The category is sometimes called "black" or "negro". Oscuro wrappers are often Brazilian or Mexican in origin.

Thanks busdaddy, you are correct in the three sizes, also the ring is 54...not 52. I've tried all your req.'s except the CAO. Next time I actually go to a cigar store, I'll have to try one. Also, the Bock y Ca is a powerhouse of an oscoro. Almost a little strong for my taste, but I think it will mellow a bit in the humidore.

I like Perdomo's and believe it or not the Fittipaldi's were decent too. I like an occasional maduro. There were several mentioned that I'll have to try.
