i have been a self employed door to door, salesman, fuller brush vacuum cleaners, great books of the western world, etc and for the last 30 plus years, an insurance broker, with an office and a fireplace in my office.

i need to read people, not what they say, but what they say with body language, and facial expression in order to make a living. toby and i had our place at the river, with the mobile home and the boats and when the kids grew up, our cruises every year, sometime two.

we never got rich, but we never missed a meal and when toby needed a kitchen appliance or a car, we didn't shop by price, but by what she wanted. toby has about 500 beanie babies and one of the finest collection of bob mackey barbie dolls.

point is i am remarkably good at reading people. i have had only one bad check in 30 + years and i knew it was going to bounce.

i watched her explain her "i know my american history, and what i said about paul river's ride to warn the british, is true." i watched her face make a slight change as she lied, and she looked like a kid who had just been caught by one of her parents. "i thought i could use the car if i needed something at the drug store?

right under the eyes and above the cheek bones. i slight almost blush. if you didn't see it, don't worry about it, only a pro, a trial attorney, a trained investigator, a psychologist, could spot it.

but it was there, the scarlet letter of deceit.

Historians agree: Palin was right about Revere

POSTED AT 9:25 AM ON JUNE 6, 2011 BY ED MORRISSEY
REGULAR VIEW

One if by land, and two if by sea … and then what? According to historians interviewed by the Boston Herald, Paul Revere then warned the British not to challenge a roused and armed populace. That came as news to many observers who had rushed to criticize Sarah Palin for her response to a gotcha question at the Old North Church:

Sarah Palin yesterday insisted her claim at the Old North Church last week that Paul Revere “warned the British” during his famed 1775 ride — remarks that Democrats and the media roundly ridiculed — is actually historically accurate. And local historians are backing her up.

Palin prompted howls of partisan derision when she said on Boston’s Freedom Trail that Revere “warned the British that they weren’t going to be taking away our arms by ringing those bells and making sure as he’s riding his horse through town to send those warning shots and bells that we were going to be secure and we were going to be free.”

The first to dispute Palin’s critics was … Paul Revere himself. In his own account of the ride, written twenty-three years later, Revere recounts how the British captured him, and how he attempted to dissuade the British from advancing. Revere warned that he had roused the local militias and that there would soon be 500 or more armed citizens coming together to repel the British.

A Boston University history professor told the Herald that Revere did indeed warn the British as well as the Americans earlier in his ride:

Boston University history professor Brendan McConville said, “Basically when Paul Revere was stopped by the British, he did say to them, ‘Look, there is a mobilization going on that you’ll be confronting,’ and the British are aware as they’re marching down the countryside, they hear church bells ringing — she was right about that — and warning shots being fired. That’s accurate.”

Of course, Revere wasn’t planning on getting captured. He and others riding to the alarm (William Dawes and Samuel Prescott) wanted to warn John Hancock and Samuel Adams of British action first, and rouse the militia second. Dawes and Prescott managed to elude the British and complete the mission, but Revere was captured. Furthermore, his warnings sufficiently rattled the British that they let him go — but without his horse. He returned on foot to Lexington, where he managed to hide a trunk with Hancock’s letters to keep it from being captured, but missed the battle.

Andrew Malcolm notes the “faux gaffe” and gives a history of such in the media:

This phenomenon is actually not a new one in American politics, although its immediate spread is obviously hastened by the Internet. Speaking of which, Al Gore did not invent it. Nor did he claim to, as often as you’ve heard otherwise.

In 1999, the hapless former journalist, who should have known to make a better word choice, told CNN that in Congress he “took the initiative in creating the Internet.”

Democrat Gore never used the word “invented.” That was part of another willful misinterpretation that fit expectations of Gore’s boasts and was gleefully spread by opponents as further proof of his unseemly hubris. It lives on to this day.

Perhaps you remember how one day during a photo op President George H.W. Bush was overheard asking a store checkout clerk how this price scanner thing worked?

That quote was immediately transmitted as proof of how disconnected that Republican chief executive was, that he had no knowledge of something as ordinary as a checkout scanner.

The fact is, asking such inane and often obvious questions as “what are you doing here?” is a bipartisan ploy used by politicians to fill the awkward time void they are hanging around someone working while photographers snap their photos several hundred times.

Frankly, I had forgotten much of the history of Revere’s ride until this incident, and I had to look it up for myself to recall what Palin meant by her response. Tom Burnam covered it succinctly and accurately in his indispensable Dictionary of Misinformation, a book I have had on my shelf for more than 30 years. If all people know of Revere is Longfellow’s poem, which is what the reaction to Palin’s remarks seem to show, then they know far less than they think.

obviously you know nothing aout sales. it is about closing the customer,
having him/her paying you for what you are selling. it's not about marketing, or the weather, or
sports

have you ever gone up to a stranger and in a few minutes have them write a check to you for
your product they never heard of before you got there?

the best training for that was fuller brush. in 4 years i trained several hundred men to make a
living by selling. they are not looking for jobs, they are making a living because of what i taught
them, suplemented by their own abilities to refine sales to their own personalitiesand skills.

remember what i said, i haven't received a pay check since the early 60's, i write my own
paycheck.

Rick.
You said that only a professional could detect the lie.
The same lie that YOU detected.
So you equated your fuller brush sales acumen with being a professional lie detector.
I merely pointed out the absurdity of it all, with no intended slight towards the salesman.

Further to the point, you comparing your fuller brush and vacuum selling, et al to being able to discern a liar as well as a "professional" is like saying the paperboy who reaches your front stoop every morning has a great arm and should pitch for the Yankees.

Don't be so cynical.
I'm sure it's an age related viewpoint, but you of all people should know that you have to lighten up. I mean, you WERE a fuller brush salesman, weren't you??

Rick,
The logo is new in honor of My Bruins trip to the Stanley Cup Finals.
Game is at 8:00pm tonight, 5:00pm for you. I suggest you watch, and the Bruins would appreciate your support and good vibes from the left coast.
Should you have any questions about the game, I would be happy to oblige, and I'm sure le HockeyDad would be equally happy. But if the questions are related to a fight or check or hit or even the rarest of rarities: a BITE, then don't ask HD. He apparently wouldn't recognize one if it were attached firmly to his arse.

But I digress.

I applaud your gene pool past, present and future. And I never once questioned your skills. Simply your reasoning (ie: because you sold fuller brushes and vacuums you can detect lies).
But I will say, that despite your unworldly gifts from both vocation and heredity, no one person is infallible.
I bet you believed Clinton when he said he didn't have sexual relations. I bet you believed Obama when he said he'd pull out of Iraq. Or when he said he didn't know about Rev Wrights hatred of whitey. Or when he said that his relationship with the murdering bomber Bill Ayers was not very close despite launching his campaign from his home.
But I digress again.

We're all "homers" of one sort or another. And you look for lies in conservatives but not liberals. And that's OK, but don't pretend the bias doesn't exist.

Politicians lie. You can't really expect us to pat you on the back when you catch them doing it, lest we all be considered seers.

Go Bruins.

Paul Revere And Palin's Mind

She may be remarkably uninformed, poorly educated and and the purveyor of so many obvious
untruths - but one thing Sarah Palin cannot be, in what passes for her own mind, is wrong. And so
if she bollixed up the account of Paul Revere in such an obvious and excruciating fashion ... she
has to insist she didn't. Here's her latest piece of nuttery:

Even Chris Wallace cannot help laughing at this preposterous grifter. But creepier still is the fact
that her cult followers responded to this perfectly predictable gaffe by trying to edit the Wikipedia
entry on Revere to align it with Palin's ramblings about his "warning the British" that ... oh, let's not
even bother.

Check out this surreal Wiki page in which the cultists are trying to insist that Revere did indeed
warn the British, and use Palin's own quote as a source! I love this succinct response from a Wiki
editor:

In the article on Paul Revere, someone has added false information in an effort to support
Sarah Palin's FALSE claims about Paul Revere. "Accounts differ regarding the method of alerting
the colonists; the generally accepted position is that the warnings were verbal in nature, although
one disputed account suggested that Revere rang bells during his ride.[8][9]" This must be
removed as it is a LIE designed to mislead. dj

One of the most pernicious and dangerous features of Palin is her clinical refusal to understand
reality, to accept error, to acknowledge when the facts she has cited are not actually facts, but
delusions. And her vanity and pathologies are so deep she will insist that black is white until her
minions actually find a source to prove it.

She's dangerous; she's shrewd; she's an exhibitionist. But she is also, we must keep reminding
ourselves, a farce. What worries me about this political leader incapable of telling fantasy apart
from fact is that, in a long and deep recession, someone who can lie that readily and manipulate
religious and cultural resentment as well as she does is a danger. Not just to America, but to the
world.

WHEN OBAMA PROMISED HE WOULD TURN LEAD INTO GOLD, I HAD HOPES.

WHEN HE POMISIED TO CLOSE GITMO, I HAD HOPES.

I ALWAYS HOPE THERE WILL BE A BAND, AND DON[T FEEL DISCOURAGED WHEN THERE
ISN'T ONE..

WHEN OBAMA PROMISED UNIVERSAL HEALTH CARE, AFTER 100 YEARS OF
PRESIDENTS TRYING, HE GOT IT PASSED. IF YOU ARE AGAINST IT, THAT IS BAD
NEWS, IF YOUR FOR IT IT'S GOOD NEWS. BUT HE GOT IT PASSED.

AS FAR AS BILL AYERS, I FOUND NO EVIDENCE OF HIM KILLING ANYONE, HE BOMBED
EMPTY BUILDINGS, BUT I DID SEE A LONG BLACK WALL WITH 50,000 NAMES ON IT
COURTESY OF AN ADMINISTRATION SOAKED IN BLOOD, AND HAVING THE POWER TO
MURDER YOUNG AMERICANS FOR NO REASON OTHER THEN THEY COULD.
AND SOME **** NAMED MACNAMARA AND A GENE3RAL NAMED WESTMORELAND
WHO BOTH OF WHOM SHOULD BE SERVING LIFE WITH OUT PAROLE FOR THE LIES
THAT BUILT THE WALL.

SINCE ANYTHING A PREACHER, OR ANY RELIGIOUS LEADER REGARDLESS OF THE
RELIGION SAYS, HAS NO MEANING TO ME, I CAN'T COMMENT ON THAT SUBJECT.

AS FAR AS CLINTON LYING, I HAVE ALREADY WRITTEN ABOUT THAT SUBJECT A
NUMBER OF TIMES, EXPLAINING WHY HE DIDN'T LIE WHEN HE SAID HE DIDN'T HAVE
SEXUAL RELATIONS WITH THAT WOMAN, A VERY PRECISE PHRASE, HE WASN'T LYING.

MY OLDEST SON ROSS GOT INVOLVED WITH HOCKEY WHEN HE WAS IN HIS 30'S , HE
GOT ME TICKETS AT THE FORUM BEHIND THE NET AND WE WENT TO THE POND AND
STOOD IN THE TOP ROW, WHICH I LIKED BETTER, BUT WHEN THE DODGERS LEFT
BROOKLYN, BASE BALL DID FOR ME, I LEFT BASKETBALL WHEN MAGIC WAS FORCED
OUT BUT WE DID HAVE SEASON TICKES FOR SEVERAL YEARS WHEN THE SEATS WERE
ABOUT TEN BUCKS A GAMJE AND PLAYOFF TICKETS WERE UNDER 30 BUCKS A GAME.

HOCKEY NEVER CAUGHT ON WITH ME, BUT I DO UNDERSTAND THE PASSION FOR THE
GAME.

"because you sold fuller brushes and vacuums you can detect lies).

THE BRUSHES AND VACUUMS ARE NOT THE POINT, START CONVERSATIONS WITH 30 STRANGERS A DAY FOR 4 YEARS AND EARN A LIVING DOING IT "

IT IS A GIFT, WELL HONED AND IT WORKS.

Rick,
These are excuses that you have come to accept.
Again, the political bias is present and obvious.
I guess you would conclude that Kennedy didn't kill Mary Jo. You're excuse would be that she drowned, so the water filling her lungs actually took her life, not Teddy the drunk.

You've spent years selling face to face in order to hone your skills.

no, kennedy was guilty of manslaughter
because of self interest. when he left that

off the bridge, out of carelessness or

he caused her death.
