Memorial weekend (my anniv. and b-day), godgillion people in vegas, paid $4frickin'hundred-n-99 dollars for a damned room, we were tired from the 4 1/2 hour drive and ate so much at the house of blues we decided to nap before partying and gambling the night away...woke up the next morning (forgot to set alarm to go out partying and gambling), tried to find ONE POS lounge chair to share by the pool for about 45 minutes before giving up and going for lunch, tried to book another night at a different hotel only to be told that it would be $409.00 (We usually pay $99 for the exact same room/hotel, said FU*K IT and drove home. Oh and BTW, forgot my supersonic secret club cigars that JJ gave me....So X, I think I'm headed for Hemingway's Friday night around 7 pm with my sister in laws and maybe my hubby too. But X, I don't think she's your type at all...who knows?

I'll be in Sin City on the 11th of June for a couple days. I think the only crowds I'll run into will be at the airports, not downtown where I'm staying. BTW, 2 nights hotel and air for $390.00.

e-Chick, that's not a good trip, but for a real big-time "Las Vegas Sucked" story, you're gonna have to hear mine from two years ago ... I won't tell it all here (too long), but sometime when you're in the mood, send me your e-mail addy and I'll tell you the whole sad story ... bottom line, is that prior to our trip, she'd had about 8 months of medical care and therapy for a rare and painful condition she'd gotten following what should have been routine carpal tunnel surgury. We went to LV to (A) celebrate our anniversary (which it will be again next week ... close to yours) and (B) for her to get a break from medical treatment ... on the 2nd morning, which was the day of our anniversary, she was struck by a speeding car while crossing the street and spent the following 3 weeks in intensive care, the first of those on life-support ... she's ok now (must be, she's growlier than ever!!), but if you mention Las Vegas to her, she'll agree wholeheartedly with you ... Las Vegas sucked!

Sorry to hear that E.Definitely the Vegas of old is it.I mean way overpriced rooms,no smoking sections, WTF is that.I'd never go on a holiday weekend but plenty of people do so they'll keep charging whatever they can get.

Been to Vegas numerous times and it never sucks. I just love the atmosphere and the husble bustle. Crowds can be a problem but never too much of one. Was there last Oct and it was beautiful. Very little in the way of crowds (right after 9/11), no foreigners and American flags flying everywhere. It was a great experience being with many people all of a mind...what a great country we live in. And being from California I love to light up a stogie, sit in front of a slot machine and donate to the gambling gods.

ONE AND ALL----toby and i go there for 2 weeks 3 or 4 times a year. we stay at the budget suites on tropicana and rent a furnished 1 bedroom apt with stove and ice box, about 1 mile from the orleans and 4 blocks from the so end of the strip. $250 a week. if someone smokes cigarettes buy 10 cartons @ $10.00 a carton saving about $20. or more. room paid for. food is food, except vegas is cheaper. two weeks gives you time to see more than the strip and the one or two hotels. great animal sanctuary 5 miles out of town to visit and take kids. donation for entry. everything from eagles to pot belly pigs. best library system anywhere. i can give info re best lamb chops in town $10.00, best prime rib $8.00, best chinese strawberry chicken $9.00. best cuppacciano is in the orleans. a counter facing the casino and people stopping by and asking, "is that a cuban you are smoking?" no bs about cough, cough, could you put that out. dress casual? toby and i went out for breakfast, did a little shopping, took in a movie, ate diner, gambled and when i got back to the room i realized i had been wearing a bathing suit all day. my kind of town. but, bring your own smokes. they get $15.00 for a sinatra and wanted $35.00 for a hemmingway masterpiece.

SteveS...DUDE! What a story!!! Thank God she's okay!!! Anyhow, I just had to vent and throw myself a PMS pity-party! I left out some other stuff...like no sex, room service that woke me up at 5 am delivering to the wrong room, a bitchy front desk supervisor. I swear, the Mandalay Bay got the first and last $499.00 out of me! Yeah, sure, it was spur of the moment with no reservations...NOT my fault everyone else in the US wanted to celebrate on my special occasions too! But you have to understand that my anniv. and b-day have always fallen around Memorial weekend, just this time it happened to be the 25th and 26th. I HATE when that happens since I have a pet peeve about actually celebrating occasions on the ACTUAL occasion and not a week later! And we have been going to Vegas since we were married in '83, usually about 3-5 times a year (my parents moved there in '87). The Venetian is byfar my fav hotel...all suites and the best room service food around town ($$$$pricey though, but I'm worth it!) and I know how to work it there. I can always get a suite there for at least $60 less than going rate or better...usually about $99 which to me is a good price. BUT I LEARNED MY LESSON ABOUT NOT RESERVING AHEAD! Our room was advertised at $179 the day before....Vegas always has and always will be one of my favorite play spots. We've seen it all from everything Rick mentioned and then some. Ever been up to Mt. Charleston? It's a fun day trip and drive (especially in a Vette) and much cooler than Vegas. There's one little lodge that has a great lunch and a few slot machines to boot. Horseback riding, skiing in the winter...if you haven't gone you should. One May it actually snowed on us...Viva Las Vegas (even though it sucks on the holidays!!!)

I feel like an old goat. When I first started going to Vegas it was still run by the mobs. A car with California license plates couldn't get a parking ticket. Silver dollars were the main currency in Glitter Gulch. It was clean. There was almost zero crime. There are still bleached bones in the desert from the rare dealer who tried to run a scam. Hey, Rick, if you get that insider stuff of yours in a word document or email, copy me in.

Eleltea,I remember. As a matter fact,I was once offered a job on the spot by a pit boss who thought I was Italian. I must be an old goat too,as I remember the Casino's being built that they tore down to build the new Casino's. X

I know that some of the wiseguys are still behind the scenes, and some of the current big players are just fronts. They just aren't the same wiseguys. Gotti could never have got away with that stupid celebrity strut of his in the old days. He'd be under a ball stadium somewhere.

Sorry to bring up this old thread again, but one thing that I forgot to mention that DIDN'T suck about Vegas was at the Venetian hotel, there are 2 guards stationed outside before you drive in. They look at you and question you. We asked what they were looking for (duh!) and they said 'Middle Eastern types.' That's not to stop a plane from hitting the hotel or a kook from walking in armed. I didn't see it at any other hotel on the strip in the 2 times I was there last month. Profiling, it's a good thing in this day and age. Ok, I think I just opened up a can of worms...bring it on (Or take it to the politics board)!

Next time check out the locals joints. Palace Station and The Gold Coast are two of the best. Rooms are good and you lose your money at a slower pace.

The Gold Coast entirely furnished my dad and stepmom's condo in Vegas...all large and small appliances too...that's how well I know the Gold Coast! I'm of the "I wanna play & party-hearty" variety and much prefer the more exciting casino/hotels...just never again on a holiday!!! Thanks for the advice though!
