I was smoking a FDO grand maduro torpedo and I really enjoyed the heck out of this thing. After falling in love with the grand maduro, I ordered additional FDOGM in churchill size, but although it was still a good cigar, there was definitely a drop-off in smoothness and an increase in after-taste/bitterness. How does the shape of a cigar alter its' characteristics? Thanks, Ken

ky - AFAIK, in ways that no mere mortal can predict   :)
Its been my experience that the 'magic' occurs in one or a few sizes of a given brand, although even that can change from one lot to the next. I've had robustos outperform churchills on one brand, and vice-versa on another. I rely on comments from other smokers who display tastes similar to my own as well as sampling a given size myself before committing to an entire box. I realize this is of little help, but perhaps some other smokers have had more definitive experiences.

Size makes all the difference in a line of cigars, all using the exact same blend. The smaller the cigar, the hotter and harsher it will burn. Different flavors will come out in different lengths and ring sizes ... the larger ring gauge and longer cigars usually smoke cooler, and thus will reveal more flavors ...

Individuals will gravitate towards the size that gives them the flavor and intensity they are looking for.

I agree with you for the most part....but I smoked a ERDMundo habana lonsdale that was almost perfect! Depends on many different things.

I heard from someone that most of the flavor of a cigar comes from the outer wrapper. Considering the wrapper makes up a very small % of the cigar, I wonder how this can be. The info came from a very good source...any comments?
