Fresh rolled cigars?

Greetings and salutations to this most wonderful smoking community. I'm entering my third month of consistent cigar smoking (about 1 or 2 per week, as opposed to 1 or 2 a year), and I have received some great information from the occupants of this community. I have just been made aware of a local place here in Chicago that freshly rolls cigars as you wait. I wanted to get some opinions on fresh rolled cigars. I remember reading that freshly rolled cigars may require a lot of 'dor time before they reach their potential. Do you agree? Is it worth it to buy fresh rolled cigars or should I just stick with the "sleeping beauties" that probably have some age on them. Thanks, Ken P.S. Thanks to all for the humidor humidity suggestions from a while back. All is running smooth now.

KY, I've heard fresh-rolled cigars are a unique experience, supposedly a real treat. I've heard you should either smoke them right away for that fresh-rolled experience or put 'em away for a good while. I guess once they've begun "setting up" they need to be left alone.

ky - I'm lucky to have several independent rollers and a small 'one-store factory' near me, and have sampled fresh rolled cigars many times. They do have a different flavor than aged ones, but as to whether that is better or not is largely a matter of personal taste.

My experience echoes CL's comment, finding that at some point after they're rolled (roughly several weeks) they begin a maturing process (fermentation?), and are then best left in the humidor for 6 to 18 months (more or less).

With all the great deals around today, however, I am hard-pressed to justify the premium cost they command in my area. My best advice would be to try some for yourself, smoking some 'green' and aging some in your 'dor in order to see if they tickle your fancy.

Just my $0.02   -Jeff

ky- I'm not sure if this constitutes a fresh rolled cigar, but I was at a party outside of Tampa that had a cigar roller as part of the entertainment. He had the filler and binder already formed and put the outside wrapper on while you watched...pretty cool to light up a smoke right after he handed it to you. As for the taste - who cares?, the experience made it a great smoke.
