Government Jobs Buoyed Bush’s Economy And Sunk Obama’s

An enduring impediment to President Obama’s economic recovery has been the erosion of public-sector employment, driven largely by layoffs at the state and local levels. As we’ve noted before, this wasn’t a problem recent Republican presidents faced. Total government expenditures (federal, state and local) grew under Reagan and the two Bush presidents much more than it has under President Obama.

But how is that reflected in Obama’s economic record? The economics blog Calculated Risk points us toward private- and public-sector payrolls under both Presidents George W. Bush and Obama, both of whom faced tough economies early in their first terms (though of wildly varied levels of severity).

We’ve adjusted these to reflect percent change, to account for population growth. The basic story is that Obama’s private-sector recovery has outpaced Bush’s, but Obama’s been hobbled by government cutbacks that Bush never faced. Quite the opposite, in fact.

To date, Obama’s overseen a cumulative loss 274,000 private-sector jobs. If the recent job-growth trend continues, Obama will enter positive territory in the next month or two. By this point in his first term, Bush had overseen over 2.7 million private-sector jobs losses. By the end of his first term, that had rebounded to a cumulative loss of 913,000 jobs.

The public-sector story is much, much different.

To date, government cutbacks have led to 590,000 public-sector jobs losses under Obama. That falloff is finally slowing, but it hasn’t reversed, and locked in austerity measures suggest it won’t any time soon. At this point in Bush’s first term, by contrast, he’d benefited from 716,000 public-sector jobs gains. And over his first full term he benefited from 900,000 gains, almost fully offsetting private-sector jobs losses.

That huge difference is reflected to some extent in today’s high unemployment rate, though Obama came into office with a high unemployment rate baked into the cake. But it gives the lie to the notion — perpetuated by Republicans — that Obama’s overseen a massive expansion of government. That was their guy.

Grape or razzleberry?

4.7% unemployment vs 8.4%

And that's with cooked numbers. I see you're all in again and that's sweet of you, Im sure we'll see more honest discourse from you in the second term. I get it, I used to buy girls things after I upset then too so I hope you get something nice like lillys or daises.

Once again, a fact filled and informative post from you. I no longer think the numbers are correct now. Thanks for setting me straight.

Fuzz,
Riddle me this:

If the GOP is so public-employee-friendly, then why do the public employees themselves vote overwhelmingly democrat?

There are liars, damn liars, and statisticians, so you can cook the books to make any point you like. But behind most stereotypes there lies a hint of truth.
So don't dismiss decades of partisan pandering as a smoke and mirrors job. Public employees and the public unions that bind them are almost exclusively democrat, and this is by design.

My sincere apologies Fuzzy, I guess I assume too much thinking I see most threads. I guess I missed a series of your posts where you showed a pattern of caring about facts. I will use the search function more often to avoid future mistakes.

No, you didn't miss any mistakes or factual evidence from CBid's househusband, Snickerdoodles.

Just more of the same drivel where he gets to yell "BUSH!" and cheer for Owedumba.

That sentence alone should tell you all you really need to know. It's like reading the National Enquirer. There's one sentence of truth followed by howling moonbattery!

It's impossible to converse with people who dismiss numbers, facts and science that doesn't fit their world view. At the very minimum if one wants to rebut something make an attempt to prove the numbers are wrong before commenting.

So how do your "numbers, facts and science" square up with post 6?

Why do the pin-stripe thugs at SEIU bloviate the left-wing mantra all day, every day, when you have "scientifically proven" that Republicans are the public sector worker's best friend, the real job creators? Is it just public sector workers are really, really stupid?

Perhaps next you could entertain us with a piece about how the KKK has actually done more for black folks than the NAACP.

What does their voting pattern have to do with how many are on the payroll? What is their voting record as a group? There are no numbers or facts in post 6, or in yours.

Shhh

Snickerdoodles doesn't get out much. What with cleaning the house, doing the laundry as well as cooking the dinner, watching Oprah and the View it doesn't give him too much time to actually do any meaningful research. It's not unfathomable to believe that he has to split computer time with the kiddies. Getting their doses of Dora the Explorer and Pedro take time and those little fingers don't operate the mouse as quickly! Not to mention that he's probably enrolled in some online college course because the Boss wants him to make something of himself while she's slaving away down at the mine. He's got to show some sort of progress because those darned Associate degrees take up to 10 years to complete in New Jersey! So when he does have time to cruise the internet he runs to Talkingpointsmemo.com and believes whatever they spew without taking the time to disseminate if the info is correct or not! He doesn't get a pass nor pity for being lazy. Just see it for what it is. Why I'm positive the meatloaf was burning away in the oven while he was salivating at his next witty retort here. He was ready to look like Super Lassie dragging the evening newspaper in her mouth looking for approval after scouring the world wide web for proof that Owedumba is somehow smarter than W. He gets nothing. No pat on the head. No cookie. Not even a "Good girl Lassie". Nothing.

This just in...breaking news!

Snickerdoodles has rallied the entire family to include his mother in law around the laptop pc. He's going to show them how brilliant he is and that he's going to show all of us evil cigar smokers at CBid that voting Democrat early and often will reduce cavities and our oil dependance on the Haus of Saud. Wait, I'm being notified that, oh...I see...they didn't...Oh my...Ladies and gentlemen I'm sorry but his hopes are dashed again. He didn't even bother to look at The Onion where CBid's other cub reporter Rick hangs his hat. Perhaps try the Huff...nice try and now for the weather...tonight's cool breeze will be followed by a pattern of......
