The jar of jelly as you called it is a sap from a tree used to bind the cigar band together. We had a roller from the D.R. come to our cigar shop and do the same. Hey.......isn't that a fascinating art! He made it look easy.

Interesting, I knew it was some type of glue, but I sort of figured it was a vegetable base or something. Thanks for the info. Yes, the guy was skilled. His hands as you can see are very worn and rough, but they move slowly and deliberatly. Sort of like rubbing the belly of a manta ray.
