If there are enough uninformed cigar buyers on this site that they continually insist on bidding these lots up to and in many cases BEYOND retail, then what the heck is the point of this site? --- for the buyers out there that know a good deal when they see one, this place is like the Twilight Zone! --- Do these people ever bother to search the web for current cigar discount prices, or do they just base the value of their purchases on what all the other clueless smokers are paying? -- Sorry for the rant, but after losing 15 auctions, I really don't see the point. --- If those poor fools only knew that I could buy what they are buying any day of the week for 5-10% less than their winning bids, perhaps this place might be a viable source for deals. --- So far, I am not impressed.

Goldengoose: Do you expect to win evey bid? Then you will always overbid. Do you expect to lose every bid? Then I agree, there's no point bidding. But if you win some, lose some and have a great smoke in the meantime, I think you're getting the bargain you're looking for. Anyway, you didn't say how many lots you won. Did you win any? The auction is a market where the prices vary as widely as they do on the web. Whoa, Nellie...have fun.

just put in your bid, set the autopilot for your max, and don't look back. they'll let you know if you won. a good buy on a smoke you want to try is a nice surprise sometime. won't happen every day. there'll be more stuff out tomorrow, usually including the same stuff you bid on before. some people get crazy at auctions. that's how they stay in business. both your question and my answer have been beaten to death, but we gotta talk about something.

I just used my usual formula for buying outside of my usual channels in a wholesale environment --- That formual is basically the box price I can buy the same cigars for online from my usual online discounter minus 10%. So far, I have lost every auction using that formula, and have seen the lots going for between 10-25% higher than I can buy those same cigars for from my other sources.. That was the basis for my original comment of "What is the point of this site?" -- If you can't get a better deal than you can from another discount cigar shop, then why go through all the waiting of an auction setting? --- Seems somewhat pointless to me. --- I will try a few more and see if I might finally get something for less than I can any day of the week, but I am not holding my breath. ;o) -- Cheers.

goose, i think a lot of folks just like the idea of getting a 'kill'. they may not necessarily even want something in particular all that bad, they just dont want you to have it. its just strange enough to be true!

Good advice Ele! --- I was just kinda tweaked by the fact that so many of the bidders obviously are use to paying retail or higher for their smokes and as a result, don't know when to call itquits with their bidding. -- I guess as long as THEY THINK they got a deal, thats all that matters. ;o)

You are right Would! -- Sad but true. Well, at least the whole thing provides some serious laughs for folks who KNOW the street price of these smokes. ;o)

People tend to do what they do at any auction ... they let their emotions be their guide. It's like gambling ... some people are addicted to the 'thrill'.

You can't come in here expecting to get a good deal everytime you bid ... just not realistic. I've been bidding at this site for several years now, and have it down to a refined 'art'. I never pay more than MSRP, most of the time it's at wholesale or slightly over, and I do my homework.

I have bid on the same item over and over again, never going over the maximum I'm willing to pay, untill I finally get it. Sometimes that has taken a month or more ... patience is everything. I have won many great deals here ... some at less than half of what CB's parent site charges ... and they have some of the best deals on thhe internet!

One other note, and Keith or Gonz can correct me if I'm wrong, but CI/CB 'takes it in the shorts' more often than they would like to see at this auction site. I've talked to them before about some of the prices/deals that some of the goods go for here ... and they more often than not, they are just barely making a profit, or not making the margin they would like.

It's the volume that keeps this site thriving ...

"Know when to hold em and know when to fold em"! Some folks are just not smart enough to figure out that there will be other days to bid on the same product! Charlie

I guess we have different tastes for cigars. The brands I like are going for some good deals. A box can sell for the price of 4 sticks at a retail store. If the regulars are not bidding its because they have already used up this months allowance. I don't pay more than $50 for a box of anything here so if I saw the same item here for only 10% higher than another site I would buy the one here because the shipping is modest and the customer service is excellent.(paint me loyal)
I did see some 5-packs going for some big prices today. Hang around, you will figure out the cycles. Maybe they wanted something in time for the holiday.

Good points all around guys! Thanks for the insight. I especially liked this comment by Slim: "I have bid on the same item over and over again, never going over the maximum I'm willing to pay, untill I finally get it. Sometimes that has taken a month or more ... patience is everything. I have won many great deals here ... some at less than half of what CB's parent site charges ... and they have some of the best deals on thhe internet! " ----- I think that this is the best policy and is exactly what I have been doing, it is just that so far, the lots I have been following have been closing for some pretty TALL prices. --- I definitely plan to keep on poking around, and I am sure I will eventually get something. --- Just blowing off a little frustration at the trend I have personally been seeing is all. --Cheers guys and smoke em if you got em! ;0)

Goose, the beauty of this place is the agony and the joy it creates. Like you've discovered, sometimes (well, most of the time..... LOL!) OBs are a real pain in the butt, then again sometimes you're winning a deal at an encredible price. One time I won a 5-pack of Cupido Toro Negros at $17.00 and were told that it was an OK deal. One week later I won another 5 in a sampler box for ....... get this - $9.00. Sometimes everyone wants a certain item, sometime it seems like noone bothers.

The point, is that on occasion, you DO get a good deal. Given, as of late, the deals are getting harder and harder to find, but as the site membership grows, that is to be expected. There are still some great deals to be had, ie.. some samplers, and boxes still go for almost 50% of their retail. Light a smoke, grab a cooool beverage, and take another look.

I must be the exception to the rule. I recently won a box of Industrial Press by Drew Estate - 3 Kings (40) for $34 (CI sells them for $79) and a box of CAO Brazilia Piranha (25) for $67 (CI sells them for $88) ...

I always get a good deal ... or I don't win it. I set my limit, and stick to it ... eventually I get if for what I am willing to pay for it.

Sometimes the 5 packs are good deals and sometimes they are not, that's up to you. I have bought 5-packs and watched soemone bidding on a box of the same gars pay more per stick than I did, and vice versa. I had three bids in on 5-packs last nights closing. I won two of them. My price per stick is 25% off the box price CI sells them for. Herf on.

Shhhhh! Don't kill the golden goose! Well, maybe the people who bid big don't read the forum. I have had some tremendous deals here. Patience and resolve (set your limit)are the keys.

Somone mentioned the upcoming holiday approaching. Perhaps that explains some of the prices. --- I figured when I first got here, that with the obvious slump in the going rates for winning auctions on EBAY these days, that Cigarbid buyers would also be effected by the recession, but apparently not to the same degree. ---- I will keep setting my limits and letting things ride. --- If I ever win anything, I will let you know. --- In the meantime, I am enjoying this forum anyway, so I am still glad I found this place! :o)
