Where is a "honest" source for cigar ratings? I thought it was CA but with ratings in the high 80's for such "dog rockets" as Lone Wolf, Thomas Hines and Tamboril I think they just work for the cigar mfgs. and provide high ratings for everyone. Most of their ratings for most cigars reviewed fall into the mid to high 80's (very good to excellent)which I known itsn't true. So, does anyone have any favorite sites cigar ratings?

The best way to get a true rating? Smoke one ... and decide for yourself. Ratings are nothing more than someone elses opinion ... very subjective.

Of course, the cigar manufacturer that pays the most in advertising revenue is going to get a higher rating in any magazine ... be it Smoke Magazine or CA.

Boy, Slim couldn't be more on target. Tastes change. You start out on burgundy then soon hit the harder stuff...

i have made the mistake of ordering boxes of cigars that i have never tried based on rave reviews. that's a dumb thing to do. the cigars i like the best, well it does not matter to me what number some group of 4 random citizens with tar encrusted taste buds assigns them.

There is a web site that allows consumers to rate cigars. -- You tend to get some pretty accurate ratings, but keep in mind that this is all VERY subjective. -- Having smoked cigars for most of my adult life, I find a lot of the "BOOM" buyers to be very unreliable in their ratings. -- In addition to their very limited experience with the subject, they tend to prefer the VERY MILD varieties and don't know anything about AGING. --- In the end, it is best to let your own senses be your guide. -- Buy samplers!

I can help you guys out. Just send me a 5-pack of the smokes that you want rated. I will smoke one now and one every 6 months. At the end of the 2 year period I will send you the ratings and a bill.

Irrespective of ratings, impartial or not, it all comes down to individual taste ... one of my favorite cigars has been said by others to be the nastiest thing they ever smoked ... one brand that is in extremely high demand and gets consistently high ratings, tastes to me much like what I would expect if I rolled some of my lawn clippings into an autumn leaf and set it on fire ... proof, if such is needed, that taste, like beauty, is in the eye (or on the tongue) of the beholder, is that some of you actually like cucumbers ... yet to me, there is not a more vile tasting food on earth ... even their odor makes my stomach turn ... forget the ratings and follow the advise given above ... smoke a lot of different cigars, remember what you like, and buy more of those ...

Agreed, it is in the "eye of the beholder" but just like movie and wine and reviewers, you can align your self with someone that has similar tastes. You do this by comparing their reviews with yours. With this you can get a general idea if you will like a certain cigar you have not tried yet. With the CA way of rating I would have to try everything. I do not have the time or money for this.

Hey Steve, How'd you get a cucumber to light? Maybe I clipped the wrong end. Barry

...my wife gave me a copy of Perelman's Pocket Cyclopedia of Cigars (1998 edition) for my birthday last month. He lists thousands of brands and sizes (some now out of production) and doesn't rate any one of them. Maybe if I read it backwards.
