A "Forward" I just received.

THIS DOES SAY IT ALL!!! AND, IT'S IN 'ENGLISH'!!!

After hearing that the state of Florida changed its opinion and let a Muslim woman have her picture on her drivers license with her face covered, I believe this is even more appropriate. Read on, please!

This is an Editorial written by an American citizen, published in a Tampa Newspaper. He did quite a job, didn't he?

IMMIGRANTS, NOT AMERICANS, MUST ADAPT.

I am tired of this nation worrying about whether we are offending some individual or their culture. Since the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, we have experienced a surge in patriotism by the majority of Americans. However, the dust from the attacks had barely settled when the "politically correct" crowd began complaining about the possibility that our patriotism was offending others. I am not against immigration, nor do I hold a grudge against anyone who is seeking a better life by coming to America. Our population is almost entirely comprised of descendants of immigrants.

However, there are a few things that those who have recently come to our country, and apparently some born here, need to understand. This idea of America being a multicultural community has served only to dilute our sovereignty and our national identity. As Americans, we have our own culture, our own society, our own language and our own lifestyle. This culture has been developed over centuries of struggles, trials, and victories by millions of men and women who have sought freedom. We speak ENGLISH, not Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, or any other language. Therefore, if you wish to become part of our society, learn the language!

"In God We Trust" is our national motto. This is not some Christian, right wing, political slogan. We adopted this motto because Christian men and women, on Christian principles, founded this nation, and this is clearly documented. It is certainly appropriate to display it on the walls of our schools. If God offends you, then I suggest you consider another part of the world as your new home, because God is part of our culture. If Stars and Stripes offend you, or you don't like Uncle Sam, then you should seriously consider a move to another part of this planet.

We are happy with our culture and have no desire to change, and we really don't care how you did things where you came from.

This is OUR COUNTRY, our land, and our lifestyle. Our First Amendment gives every citizen the right to express his opinion and we will allow you every opportunity to do so ONLY after you become a citizen. But, once you are done complaining, whining, and griping about our flag, our pledge, our national motto, or our way of life, I highly encourage you to take advantage of one other great American freedom, THE RIGHT TO LEAVE.

and if any among us were to opt to leave and move to a country where the culture and language were quite different, does anyone think that country should go out of it's way to educate, inform, and allow our emigree to vote there in English?? or do you think it not only far more likely, but appropriate, that said emigree would have to learn the language of his/her new country and adapt to the prevailing cultural mores ??

I agree, that immigrants need to adapt ... my ancestry came from other places and did so, why are we coddling them now? (Answer: more of the liberal PC bullsh** I'm so damn sick of)

It's about votes. The latino vote is huge! The asian vote will be a huge force in the future too.

E-Chick ----i agree with "IMMIGRANTS, NOT AMERICANS, MUST ADAPT" when my grandfather and grandmother got off the boat at ellis island one of the first things they did was go to school to learn to speak english, they wanted to be americans. the only thing my grandfather brought from russia was a good salami.---i resent anything the govt prints in other languages. shoes are not zapatos. milk is not leche. classes taught in spanish instead of english demean the young person in school as though he or she is not smart enough to learn in english. if i am in a store and the clerks talk in a foreign language, i leave. --- however: this is not a christian nation. we are for the most part a judeo-christian nation. some of us have no interest in religious doctrine and although we respect other people's beliefs, we don't want someone else's beliefs forced upon us with the advertisements in public buildings, owned equally by the believers or non believers. i no more want to see any religious messages on any walls except my own and i doubt that you want to see "THE IDEA OF GOD IS PURE NONSENSE" displayed in public buildings. be very careful of the subtle things religious people do to try to indoctrinate people to their way of thinking. remember spain in the 14th or 15th century was the christian capital of europe and they burned 100,000 women at the stake for heresy. they also invented the inquisition. the crusades were done in god's name to kill the non believers. in the beginning of this country we burned "witches", killed native americans, because we wanted their land, and we held people as slaves. not a very nice beginning, but the country learned not to kill any more native americans, because they were all in concentration camps and we had all the land, and when slavery ended, we simply kept the darker skin people out of the mainstream, continuing the idea that white skin people are superior to dark skin people. do you really want to kill me E because i don't believe what you believe?

While this is a very interesting thread, this is not a new debate. Almost every group of immigrants to the US settled in small isolated communities when they arrived. Whether they are called little italy or little havana makes no difference. People are comfortable with others that are similarto them. The assimilation of the Irish, Germans, Poles, Italians etc was not the instantaeous conversion you proclaim. In fact we still have Little Italies and Chinatowns in cities all accross the US. The wave of latin american peoples into the country is in its early stages, and it will take years for the melting pot to begin work. The trend has shown itself to be clear. The original generation clings to ways of the homeland. the language, foods, religious habits etc remain the same. It has traditionally been the second generation that breaks away from those strict traditions. Second generation children want to be like their American peers. They want to fit in, and in doing so, they become American. In the past we have heard the same anti immigrant rhetoric, but rest assured assimilation will happen one way or another.

carmine7075 --- of course you are correct.--bilingual education just slows down the process and printing govt forms in other languages does the same thing.--- i am guessing we are the only country that does it.

...I think I'll listen before saying anything. America is the only place on the planet where you can speak for yourself as "we" and offend someone. God only knows if there's anything subtle about that.

Some European countries have more than one official language. Switzerland for example.

Yesterday at LAX (July 4) is just another example why we need to recall student visas, shut down close our borders for about 5 years and start thinking about America for Americans! Yes, we all are basically immigrants from one generation or another! But they did not come to this country to hurt, kill and destroy! Charlie

Do not be weak and change what the US stands for. "bring us your tired, your hungry . . . yearning to be free" should always remain our motto. Fight the good fight. Keep the borders open, and laugh in the face of weak terrorists that cannot hope to defeat us. We will win the fight the way we have always fought witout closing borders and without running away. Closing the borders would be a cowardly act of weakness by a people afraid to stand by their convictions. We cannot and will not be afraid to face the enemy, even if he is among us!

We definitely need to stop imigration for the time being, at least until there is a working system in place to better track people. Imigrants into this Country must comply with our identification standards and lets quit bending the rules...

Immigration isn't the problem. It's the internal bleeding hearts that insist on "fixing" things so as not to offend anyone in the minority. We are forced to conform so one or two idiots won't feel violated. We need to enforce existing laws to the fullest, even if someone feels their miranda rights weren't read in their native tongue. We CAN say the word "God" in the presence of non-believers without it being an attempt to sway them to our beliefs. We CAN raise our FLAG proudly without it being militant. Our sports teams should keep their current names even if it hurts someones feelings. We are the leaders, not the meek who should be BEGGING for our assistance. We are no longer burning witches or forcing folks to the back of the bus, despite what the doom and gloom LIBERALS try to tell you. The money in my wallet, which was eaned by me, states very clearly: In God We Trust. Always has, and always should. How thinned skinned must one be to be offended by that? How shallow must their life be to complain about the ideals this country was founded on? I don't care which peaceful religion (if any) someone belongs to. I'm not judging, nor am I recruiting. So why be offended?

Religion creates divide. end of story. this is why im not religious. ive seen plenty of world hardship and religion is what most people out of this country have to cling to. all types of religions crawl this earth. BUT, someone should not be offended by someone else because they mentioned THEIR God in front of them. All the people who believe that the religion should be taken out of THIS WHOLE COUNTRY's pledge should get over it.

I didnt spend time in the military defending this country so schmucks HERE can ruin in. With pride and honor i served everyday because i knew and still know that this is the greatest country in the world. Seeing this kind of garbage sickens me and believe me, im not any sort of republican or democrat. i have no loyalty to political teams, which is exactly what they are. i only want whats best for this country and robbing others of the right to mention the word GOD in OUR pledge isnt it. FREEDOM is what this country is SUPPOSED to be about.

Davey is correct when he states that religion causes a divide. Historically, relgion has been the cause of many conflicts armed or otherwise. The crusades, the inqusition, the protestant reformation, england's anglican reformation, pliver cromwell's uprising in england, the exodus of heugonots sp. from france, and the departure from england be many of the colonists. Religion has long been a sticking point in history. Its a shame that otherwise peaceful people are willing to fight over something that in most cases preaches peace. In the US, the separation of church and sate has be overinterpreted. The intention of that statement was simply to keep from having a state sponsored church like the one the founding fathers had fled in England. The state church had become oppressive, and they didn't want that toi occur here. That doesn't mean that the government couldn't use the word God. Also, an interesting twist, the supreme court is high on free speech. Where does that fit into this equation? If a teacher would like to pray out loud in her classroom, she is protected by the first amendment to do so. The govt cannot, in effect, censor his/her speech. If a challenge was brought to this ruling based on th violation of one right to free speech to say the word God in a govt building, the court would have no choice but to allow it or nullify the fisrt amendment by ruling against it. Interesting stuff, constitutional law.
