Ok so is it all hype or a good cigar, being in washington, i really havent been brave enough to cough up the $45-50 a stick.
anyone who has tried them please let me know, and if you happen to know of a cheaper retailer email please.

I fall into the all hype side of your question. I finally had a couple of these. Very good cigars, but the price is still ridiculous. You can get cigars just as good for much less, they just won't impress others as much.

Hey ts, don't pay that much for Opus X! I bought two robusto's for about $18 per. As for the cigar, if you like very full body and strong flavors, it doesn't get much better. I have a friend who didn't like them, said they were too strong (asked him if he had any left, I'd take them off his hands!) I happen to enjoy the Opus very much and save them for special occasions.

I enjoy Opus very much, beautiful and robust cigar, but they are a tad bit too proud of them for my tastes! Charlie

Great smokes. Yes they are strong but extremely well balanced and very complex. $45 a stick is too much, even the $18 is high.

Opus is a great cigar only if you can get it at retail. Fuente demands that authorized Fuente resellers don't gouge pricing. A robusto should be around the $12 tag. Anything much over a $2 higher is considered gouging in my book. I only shop at Tinderbox for Opus because they don't gouge pricing. However, it is first come, first served and you are limited to 2/day per person. Excuse for mentioning another store here, but this gouging crap will only cease if people refuse to get screwed on overpriced cigars. Whoa, almost fell off my soapbox...

OUCH, $45!! Too much. Good cigar. I collect as many as I can the couple of times a year that my local shop gets them in. I pay between $8 and $15 each with a limit of 2 per day. I haven't had less than 10 in the 'Dor at any one time. For equal money I'll take the Padron Anniv. line. Barry

EVERY Fuente authorized cigar store I have ever been to (with one exception..the previously mentioned chain tobacco store...very reasonable prices) have gouged their prices (gouging range between $8-20 over "MSRP" per stick, depending on which ones) on Opus X...I really don't believe that hype that Fuente "forbids" overcharging, but I don't think they overtly encourage it either...I think it's a nice marketing ploy..They have to love hearing how much people have paid for one of their sticks...Although I absolutely love Opus X (I only have a stick about twice per year at the most...a few years ago, I used to enjoy them more frequently), there's no way I would pay more than $13 for a robusto...$45-$50??!...Insane...There's one place (a microbrewery/restaurant) near my house (southern Chicago burbs) that do have Opus X (robusto size..I don't recall exactly which ones), but they (attempt to)sell them for (get this) $70 a stick!!!...They've actually sold two sticks since opening the single box they bought about three years ago...It's still in the humidor, still with two sticks missing..They are definitely NOT a Fuente-authorized dealer....Keith

Actually the Opus X is one my favorite smoke. Fortunately for me I live in a relatively small town but our Opus dealer always seems to have them. They also sell them at MSRP plus local taxes. Perhaps one reason they always have them is that they never sell them on the internet and limit sales to 2 a day. ORV

X, Here's a trade off I use when I pay premium price for a fine smoke...instead of buying new shoes, I have the old ones resoled.

thanks for all the info. Washington is about the worst state to live in if you want to smoke cigars. While cbid order was in delevery I went down to the local cigar shop and had to pay 11$ for a avoXO robusto, and fuente chateau robusto way 7$. We pay about 2x-2.5x the worst online prices.

Contrary to popular belief, Carlito does not take it lightly when authorized retailers gouge the public on any of the Fuente cigars.

All it takes is contacting the Fuente sales rep for your state (I know of one, but can't recall his name, or look it up, as I am at work). He is I believe, an east coast rep, and is very diligent about it ... and has gone to great lengths to put an end to it in his areas. Some retailers have even lost their authorization to sell Fuente products ...

A retailer can charge whatever he wants for any product he sells. If Fuente won't sell to him, he can buy them elsewhere when he can find them and continue to mark them up. I saw Opus for sale on the concourse at Las Vegas airport for $60.00-$85.00 each. The little xXx PowerRanger belicoso is an excellent smoke, but I'm not buying it for $60.00.

So, which state has the least taxes on cigars? I will search for authorized dealers in that state and contact them to see if I can purchase over the phone. Thanks.

I read that at the other site about Carlito supposedly not taking it lightly when "authorized retailers" gouging, but to be honest, I don't believe much of it personally

Why does the link above state that New Hamshire has a tax of 27.1% Wholesale Price? Just curious ... as I don't know of any state that doesn't have some kind of tobacco tax ...

Had a couple and didn't get overly impressed. It is, obviously, a good cigar. However the $$ it commands is tough to justify.

I can make a list of half a dozen cigars which I could buy a half-dozen of for the same price as an Opus X that I would rather smoke even if price were no object, and that is not to take anything away from the X which is a quality cigar. One of them is a Bolivar (non Cuban)like the one I had last week. All a matter of taste. Try not to succumb to hype, ego, vanity, marketing and bravo sierra.

I agree w/El. A couple of years ago I would have said he's full of it. I have a pretty good collection of X's but I haven't smoked one in 6mos. That's because, like El said, there are other gars that I have that I would rather smoke. When price comes into play,..let me see, would I rather have 4 or 5 cigars that I like as much or better,or one X. I will say this though,it is a very good gar. X

In response to the gentleman from Washington State, I HEAR YA! -- I REFUSE to buy cigars locally due to the tax as well as the gouging I see on practically everything I smoke! -- Online purchasing is all I do and have been doing for the last 6 years. -- Its the ONLY way to fly! -- Not only no cigar tax, but NO SALES TAX either! :o) GG7 from Seattle Wa.

GG7,

the sales tax wouldn't bother me, if the tobacco tax wasn't so damn crazy. 12$ a stick for a Avo#2 or $7 onyx res. YIKES!

anyway gg, drop me a email and we can b*tch about our otherwise great state. [email protected] (everett area)

...Well, I just paid more for a single Opus X (got ten of them) than I've ever paid for a cigar. Got to be crazy. Still I paid less than the per cigar price on boxes of Opus X at the other cigar auction site. The retailer opened a box of Super Belicosos so I could get a couple of those. This is a beautiful cigar...now I'm set for special occasions for the next few years. Wonder what it will smoke like?

Orv...no truer words could be said. Since my heart attack last year, I've wasted no time on lousy smokes. (When my doctor asks me if I'm still smoking, I say, "You bet, and enjoying the hell out of it." In fact, I had to try the Opus X Super Belicoso this weekend (with a cold Modela Negra). I can see what the fuss is about...it's similar to the difference between sipping a house brand table wine (pretty good) with the soup course then moving to a real fine vintage red for the meat course (pretty good too). I still don't know if it's worth the difference in price. Maybe my palate's not tuned in. Guess I need to smoke a few more.

I have yet to try the OpusX, but want to although I cringe slightly at the thought of setting fire to something this expensive ...

I must say, I agree emphatically with the notes above about life being too short and each day being special ... it'd be nice to have a bit more means with which to do so, but I'm determined to live the rest of whatever life-span I'm gonna have on as near to first-class basis as my means allow ...

In addition to fine cigars, fine wine, fine women, etc, I have a great appreciation for other fine things in life and must say that the interaction on this board is one of the fine things in life I really enjoy ... this is a bunch of pretty bright folks, some of whom mask themselves in occasional silliness, but as I said this morning in another thread, I like that silliness as much as the threads relating to cigars and love the various "thread-jackings" (love that phrase, Slim; thanks) including those with sexual innuendo ...

Guess I probably WILL try one of those OpusX, just to see what the fuss is about, but damn, what if it turns out I really LIKE them?? I better hope I win the lotto, eh?

Rick...my best smokes come from a 22-year old pair of Red Wing Irish Setters I use for yard work. Many a mile, never resoled and still truckin'. I have to laugh though when I see myself in others, like the older fellow at Home Depot this weekend, dressed in carpenter pants, work shirt, gimme hat and pretty good pair of knock-around work shoes, but barely able to put one foot in front of the other...guess we can rationalize anything, even increasing the trade deficit. Oh, by the way, welcome back. You are the real Rick, right?
