If the NRA published a "study" on gun violence, would you view the results with skepticism?
The argument has always been that studies published by private organizations (pharmaceutical companies, private charities, cigar forum polls, anti-smoking agencies) are more suspect than those done by a university, since universities have the tenure system. In theory, having tenure allows professors to study and publish opinions which are possibly contrary to popular opinion, if their research were to point them in that direction. (this is not going to be a discussion of whether the tenure system is abused, or whether there aren't other forces influencing them, I'm just pointing out that I would be more inclined to believe a study performed by someone who's future employment isn't immediately at the mercy of the results.)
Other than that, I'll take data from anywhere. If you suspect they are skewing the conclusions, then look at the raw data. In a PUBLISHED study (not the link I provided, but the actual article, published in a reputable journal) they always include the raw data.
But you know... trolls gotta troll... seems to be the only thing they can do.
