Some of the toughest gun laws in the country. And all those new laws are working at keeping guns out of the hands of children.

New York gun law lacks cop exemption

New York’s new gun control law, passed after a quick legislative deal in the wake of the Sandy Hook massacre, reportedly neglected to exempt the state’s active and retired officers from having high-capacity magazines larger than seven rounds — less than half the amount that most of the state’s law-enforcement officers have.

State officials are looking to amend the law in the sixty-day window allowed to make changes, according to WABC-TV.

It’s a glitch in a bill that’s received strong praise from gun-control advocates, and that earned New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo praise for his effectiveness in quickly getting new law passed while Washington officials lock horns over new federal proposals.

A Cuomo spokesman didn’t respond to a POLITICO request for comment but told WABC that “currently no police officer is in violation” of the law. The law has not yet taken effect.

This new law is such a joke, they threw it together so fast just to beat Odumba to the punch. As I stated in another thread they have classified my TC Omega Muzzleloader as an assault rifle because it has a thumbhole stock.
This law will hurt more people than help, but that was not it's intent anyway.

why would they need to make changes? if i am supposed to be able to defend myself with a seven round mag then surely a highly trained law enforcement officer with a bullet proof vest shouldn't need a high capacity mag to protect himself.... besides that this new law means the all the bad guys will only have seven round mags too, so i think that no one should be exempt of a law....

The Federal AWB is being proposed on Thursday... hopefully the bill dies a painful death.

Yes, and if I took the time, I could track down a story from serveral years ago when a couple times, Philadelphia police officers left their service sidearms in sinks in school bathrooms. But the one that takes the cake, is the Philadelphia police officer that allowed students to pass her still loaded sidearm around a classroom, and then discharged a round when she went to put the gun back in her holster. Maybe police shouldn't be allowed around children.

... police and priests... I could get behind that... :)

Sarcasm

I'm all for allowing people to have guns. But I think we have to recognize that the more guns we have around schools, the higher the chance that an idiot will leave it behind somewhere... thus increasing the chances that sally 5-year old will decide to jokingly point it at franky-5year old who she has always had a crush on.

Something many retired military men and women learn quickly when they join a police force: A lot of cops can't shoot worth a sh*t, and the academy firearms training leaves a lot to be desired.
